This is the reply from their (non English) customer services when I asked about it:

    "Dear customer,
You can only get a reply on your mobile, when you mention your number in the message to be send.
    Kind regards,
    Customer service"

Makes me giggle! :D Even if you do that, I presume it depends upon the recipient highlighting the number in the message and selecting "send text" from the phone's menu. I bet they had a little chat about that in the Bombay or Dehli call centre and played around with their mobile phones, before they worked out a reply! Probably they haven't been told the correct answer themselves. That lack of training, I suppose, is why the texts only cost 1p.

There is no call centre, in India or anywhere else.

That's one of the reasons why these services are cheap.

Not quite sure why, and I have e-mailed them my query, but at certain times, the texts can't be sent...anyone else experience this?

I have only registered my mobile number.

Since this thread was last used, texts to UK mobiles via 18185's website increased to 3½p each - and were still that price on 20-5-2009.

The good news is, today, the price has dropped to 3p per text.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
