All banks these days do credit checks even for basic accounts, the only ones that don't are the ones from cashplus.

Most banks offer Internet Banking with their basic accounts. Which one would depend on what you want it for:- do you need a branch that is local? Do you have debts with a bank? if so ensure you don't set up a basic account with the same group, eg RBS & Natwest etc. Have you been recently bankcrupt (some bank say you have to be discharged for a year before you would be eligible)
Most basic accounts now allow you to withdraw at any link machine so at least you have not got to worry about the ATM being owned by the bank you choose.
