Contactless card not doing contactless payments

I had my new Santander debit card sent to me last week and told me to activate it, I needed to use in an ATM first. On Saturday, I just got a printed mini statement.
Yesterday, it was the first time i've been in a shop which accepts contactless payments. Held card over reader and it said card not authorised. I didn't have time to visit a branch today, so should I go in and get it looked into?

Not had a problem with my Barclays c/l card, but I thought that you'd be prompted for the PIN before the transaction was denied. Have you used it for other payments or cash withdrawals? I actually touch the reader with my card0

You have to do a transaction at a Santander ATM to activate. Not just a statement. This is an open forum, anyone can post and I just did !0

Hi,
Have you made any chip and pin transactions with it yet as on $antander website under FAQ's it says.......................... Use your contactless card for a normal Chip and PIN transaction at least once before making a contactless purchase (our way of making sure you have received your card).
Here's the link if you want to check out any other queries

Just be better than you were yesterday.0 -
As others have pointed out you have to make an actual chip and pin transaction..... this is common for nearly all contactless cards provided by most banks.Time is a path from the past to the future and back again. The present is the crossroads of both. :cool:0
