I live in a terrace house want to refurb the bathroom having putting up with the old one for nearly 20 yrs.... However first 2 bathroom fitters were let"s say evasive one wouldn't"t give a quote but charged £140 a day and probably take 3 weeks!! The next one was high end and quoted nearly 14k! The last one came letting me hanging for nearly 2 weeks then eventually emailed back to say he wouldn't"t quote on it V strange

So any tips or things to look out for would be most helpful , got someone coming to quote again tomorrow recommend by local Farr&harris so hopefully should be decent. Been saving hard so want to get it right, any help most appreciated.

  • Be worried if they can fit you in quickly. Go & see work they've done for others, check trading standards if anything bad known.

Are there any Polish plumbers in your area?
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

That's £2k on labour, give or take, and is a reasonable price in my area.

What were you expecting to pay may I ask? £50 a day? £100 a day?

Businesses don't run on love and biccies I'm afraid (Although it helps smooth things along ;) )

I understand but however 3 weeks seems a bit much , and that wasn"t set in stone it could have taken longer than that. I didn"t want to pay a daliy rate I wanted the job done quote which I don"t think is unreasonable... It"s only a terraced house not huge by any stretch of the imagination.

Don"t want particularly cheap but moderate cost that will last

When it comes to actually getting the bathroom done make sure you specify every last detail exactly, because if there is a wrong (or different) way to do things to the way you "knew they would be" they might well pick it.

    - Specify what style of loo you require in order to have as much of the "works" hidden as you have decided will be (don't assume that no "works" on show in the photo or showroom means no "works" on show when the loo is actually in situ and working)

    - Specify what height the shower slider rail is to be up from the floor and don't just assume they will put it at the correct height (which, incidentally, is set at a suitable height for "all the family").

    - Specify what type of switch you will be having for the extractor fan and where it is to be.

    - Don't assume that, if you pick one of those semi-pedestal washbasins that the "works" will be hidden or even that any large (deliberate) holes in side of washbasin will be filled with decorative etceteras.

Speaking cynically, make the assumption that everyone who does this type of job probably has either a cheapest possible/not too concerned about doing things "properly" type finish on the one hand OR can afford and has the "height of luxury/bespoke/you name it" type bathroom on the other hand. There is a very good chance they might not have that good an idea as to exactly how a mid-price range is supposed to look when done properly.

£140 a day seems reasonable if they put the time in.

Can't hurt to try them and if you ain't happy sack em.
