Sorry i was only pulling your leg. I wouldnt do a parachute jump either, although would love to have the courage too.

An auction sounds like a really good idea. I went to one last year for Breast Cancer *Tickled Pink*, the organisers got all the local companies/teams/businesses to donate things/services/tickets etc, and they were all more than happy to !! And the crowd were more than happy to spend as it was for a good cause!

I am sure you would get great support if you started planning it early enough, printed posters, tickets etc....

Good Luck, and keep us posted.

I would agree with pot. There seem to have been so many sponsered events, something like an auction seems to give as well as receive and is a fun event. You could also have a raffle and refreshments to help raise money.

If you win enough comps, they could be the raffle prizes!

What about walking from Lands End to John O'Groats? It would be my dream to do this but unfortunately I don't think that I'd ever get the sponsors.

If you go for anything with a raffle then I would gladly donate a couple of t-shirts for a prize. (We have our own printing company) PM me with an address to mail them too, and the very best of luck!

I don't know if its a silly idea, but inspired by campaigns about keeping Britain tidy, why not pledge for a "clean up"? Loads of people go around the country side and national parks dumping rubbish. So choose whichever one you like (i.e. The Peak District) and pledge not just a walk (distance optional), but a collection of every bit of rubbish you find on your way? It would be a physical challenge with a difference and that way the money you collect is for two good causes. After all, babies need a clean planet. ;-)

    Hi there again

At my kids' school they recently held a sponsored bounce on a bouncy castle - cost £50; raised nearly £1,600!!!! And it's not too high!

have you asked the SCBU if they have any sponsored events coming up that you could join in or help organise?

And, I know this is not quite the kind of grand challenge you are looking, but how about giving up smoking and putting what you save from that into a pot for them? Plus, I think that kicking an addiction is as grand a challenge as you can get!

    HI

For what it is worth, I have been doing a similar thing for a cancer hospital who looked after my dad. I started from the premise that although I am prepared to work hard anything seriously physical is completely out.

So I started with he my skill set which is that I am a good writer, a good cook, I love parties and I could talk my way out of ANYTHING. So what I have done is.

    A gastro-ball.

Essentially I have put together a themed cookbook by doing a whole heap of leg work and getting all the chefs from the best known local restaurants to donate a recipe or two.

Then I have arranged a ball where the menu is dishes that are in the cookbook. I have had some of the chefs who have donated agree to come and demonstrate how some of the dishes are made (with the
chance to sample) and I have persuaded local stores to donate food and cooking related items for auction on the night. By the way local places are much more accomodating than chains who all just say they have national policy etc etc and don't donate anything. It is worth hitting pubs/restaurants/hotels as well as they donate meals, nights away etc. The auction was a silent auction so we got some publicity done and got people to bid even if they weren't coming to the night.

I got the venue as a donation, the staffing for the night was volunteers, etc.

Then just to be cheeky I dug round to find out who the movers and shakers in the city were (eg company directors etc and wrote to them to tell them about it and several bought tickets along with some of their staff - this works well if you offer a little discount if they book a whole table).

I tried to make it pretty upscale so it raised more cash. It is bloody hard work, several months of very hard work and raw knees from begging but we raised several thousand pounds and got a whole heap of really positive publicity for the hospital. And we got loads of extra money from sales of the cookbook which is now also sold in the shop in the hospital and people come in just to buy it.

People were also really complimentary about having an event which had a different theme than just a dinner dance.

btw companies, especially local ones are really good about giving time and stuff if they get some publicity about it, so we did a booklet which we gave to everyone with stuff like who donated what, chef bios for those that were demonstrating, special thanks to any organisations who helped us out etc, the recipes from the actual dinner for the night, how to order the whole cookbook

    Good luck!!!!
