I've had a Sony Xperia Z3 Compact for 6 weeks. A hairline crack in screen has rendered the screen unusable. Vodafone sent the phone for repair under warranty. Repairers have said they will only repair for a charge of £144. I'm not prepared to pay this as the fault seems to be with the handset. I've never broken a phone in 20years and not dropped or misused the Sony. I'd welcome any advise on how to get phone repaired for free?

Is the crack like the one in the pic I posted and also smooth when you rub finger across it, if so I'm fairly sure they will repair under warranty.

It's good that Sony fixed your screen but you don't need a working screen to get photos of a phone. You just need to plug it into a computer via the USB connection and you can browse the files on the phone with the computer and copy off anything you wish to save.

Just tried this, but unfortuntantly I have to go into settings on the phone, this is not possible as the screen is inaccessible .. I Should of set this up when the phone was working, !!!!!!!g kicking myself now

I smashed my Xperia and the screen was viewable but unresponsive. DO NOT ASSUME YOU CAN'T GET YOUR DATA. You can, trust me. All you need is a USB OTG cable. This is a microUSB to usb female cable for you to plug in a usb mouse. This then allows you to control the phone through the mouse and you can navigate to your settings and set up the USB connectivity. Hope you see this in time before you send it away!!

Not a problem. You can buy the USB on the go cables from online stores and ebay for stupidly cheap (sub-£2) but if you need it urgent and have to go somewhere local (Maplins, pc shops etc) expect to pay anywhere between £5 and £15.

    Cheers

    Update..
Had a reply from sony and it's deemed not to be covered by warranty, I'm a reasonable guy and know the phone is over year old (does have a 2 year warranty mind) and understand screens break, but what I can't understand is that it has an identical crack as before which also occurred in my pocket,so how can first repair be covered under warranty and this one they say it's an impact crack! It's well known that they have a tendency to crack in people's pocket due to manufacture defect as aired on watch dog, which the cs guy said there fine and no known problems!
Also incorporated in the £90 repair they charge £24 handling fee which when I asked what's that for, he said for repairer to assess the screen, so that's £24 for about 30secs work by reckoning ..jeez

They can send the fone back for £24.but told them to keep it.. Washing my hands with sony... Adios
