Laptop Keeps Freezing

Do you have a Recovery Partition or a Recovery Disc?0

It could well be memory, but it may be intermittent or partial. I recently had a rather similar PC problem, and eventually found that two of the four RAM connections (rather than the RAM itself) were causing the fault. It isn't that easy to determine, butNiftyDigits wrote: »I suspect a memory(RAM) problem, but if Diagnostics says no, then reinstall the OS.

will take you through the process. Be warned, it can take a considerable time, so overnight is best.0 -
@Fergie
Hey there, ok so it seems we have tried to eliminate the sony software causing issues, i would drastically say lets recover just yet, when did this start happening originally. Recovery and rebuild is last case scenario there are a number of things to try before we do that.
Can you tell me what the service tag is of your laptop as i would like to make sure your on the latest drivers for your laptop as dell do regularly update to fix bugs and issues in hardware or the bios. A service tag is 7 digit alpha numeric number normally underneath the laptop its unique to itself.

Im more than happy to help you and assist. You say you have avast, is that up to date and have you run a virus scan and also run malwarebytes?
Secondly go through control panel, programs and features wait for the list to populate and go through the list and see if there is anything suspicious you dont know what it is and write down and list ig nore all Microsoft Updates or anything with Microsoft in. Ignore the obvious like Chrome Firefox, Office etc. Apps you know of.
Have you got any toolbars installed or pc cleanup tools?
Have you got any registry cleaners installed?
If you can take a screenshot of this by using the snipping tool in windows 7 to find this click on the start menu just type in at the bottom snipping the icon is a pair of scissors.
Click on it open it up and basically draw a box over it and then save this picture and attach it into the reply if you can.
Come back to me.Kind Regards,

I think it's either a memory problem or a processor problem. The problem got really bad yesterday, so decided to back-up and reinstall and the problem is still there as bad as ever and it's just not limited to the internet. C&P slows everything right down too.
Is there anyway to pin point the problem?0 -
Fergie i sent you a pm,
I doubt its hardware related its rare you have a fault with processor its going to be software related telling your cpu and memory to work harder. Reply to my pmKind Regards,

If you had a memory problem your laptop wouldnt boot and dell diagnostics would report this. You can run preboot diagnostics but we can get to that laterKind Regards,

You need to earn respect on the forum by publicly showing that you are capable of actually helping, not by demanding that other members PM you or stating that you have a worthless certification in your signature!
Only a bell end feels the need to quote their worthless certification in their signature!
Bell ends need not post on here. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -

I would still take the RAM out, clean it with a eraser and replace it.
Remove all peripherals from the machine(anything plugged into USB ports, for an instance.0 -
I have taken the RAM out, cleaned it and made sure it was reseated properly.
I have also done a full factory reset, nothing plugged into laptop and it is still freezing.
Borse thanks for the offer of help and any assistant you can provide I would be more than gratefully. However, be aware that I will not be phoning you and I will certainly not be letting you to remote in to my machine. You have no creditable on the website having only been on here a month and anybody can claim to be anything on the net.0 -
Just running the dell diagnostic test again. It has come up with the following error:
DST Short Test
Error - 0146
Error code 2000-0146
Hard drive 0 - self test log contains previous errors.
Could it be that my HDD is on it's way out and I need a new one? Would that cause my laptop to freeze?0
