    Anyway, decided to just play anyway........and this is what the front looked like

    - not bad for a first attempt imo!! However knowing that apparently tension is an issue, the back looked like this despite me adjusting the tension wheel from 4 down to zero........help!!!!

    AA, this is exactly the problem I was having this weekend, thank you for everyone who offered suggestions ... I am going to have another go soon. My machine is supposed to have automatic tension (one of the main reasons I bought it!) and it works brilliantly on all the other sewing I do. I tried changing the bobbin, rethreading - multiple times, changed the needle, tried the tension from automatic to 5 and then back again and it would work for a short while till the thread broke then refused to play again. I really must be missing something!!!


    Anyway, something did go right - the cushion is done and in use.

    The baby quilt needs to be finished soon. I got a phone call from the expectant parents asking (very apologetically) when it would be done. Its her first and she's only 17 so is panicking about being ready early ... I was a bit miffed to begin with but can understand, its new territory for her. So new thread purchased before I do battle again. If that doesn't work its back to the old machine!!!


    Sorry for the length of the post and not mentioning everyone I would like to ... still getting used to posting!

    Patches41048 So glad it went right in the end , that cushion is gorgeous. Sounds like we are all guilty of having more than one project on the go and I have to admit I'm always thinking about my next project, I have a big notebook where I jot down ideas, fabric choices etc .
    Weather is lousy here today so may sew later, have to drive to Weston super Mare tonight with 2 friends. Our quilt group has made a charity quilt and we are going to sell raffle tickets for it in aid of Tenovus a cancer charity. I think we are getting a talk by Jan Hassard when we are there too. Not heard her before but I think she is well known among the quilters. Hope the wind and rain dies down before then, the M5 is not a good place to be when it's windy.

    Sat down to do some sewing but just couldn't get any inspiration. I have to do a challenge quilt no bigger than 24 inches on longest side on the theme of Hearts and Flowers. Has to be done by 18th October. Wish I was more creative.

    Well with sitting at DS' house yesterday I only managed to do a couple of lines of FMQ on the celtic quilt yesterday. I may not get much done today either because I want to bake and clean. The reality is probably that I shall do the baking and then be tempted by the sewing machine before I do any cleaning!

    I wanted to sew but didn't want to work on my lap quilt yesterday so I've started an embroidered panel for a quilt three quilts along! DH suggested we might have something a bit less patchworky and a bit more arty for our bedroom, so that's what I'm doing. It's a nice relief from the other things as it's more detailed.

    Hi all
    I need some advice!
    What's the best way to lay out fabric & wadding layers to pin/baste them before quilting? DS quilt has grown and grown and is nearly 2m square :eek:
    I've watched a couple of tutorials on YouTube which say you need to hold the backing down really flat, then wadding, then quilt top, then pin it, but I don't have the space! Is there a way to do a large quilt on a smallish table? Do I need to tack it or will basting spray and pins work? I have one of those little guns that shoot plastic tacks thro, maybe that would do it?
    I'm going to the K&S show this weekend so I could get stuff there if I need to
    I feel like I've bitten off way more than I can chew!
    And then if course I'll need to quilt it on an ordinary sewing machine...
    Luckily DS isn't picky, he won't care about a few mistakes, but I'd like to do the best job I can.
    Sorry I'm babbling now - any advice would be appreciated.

    Hi rosy a I have used a method using 2 battens. I found a
    Tutorial on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PcF0_hqbOrk
    It's called Basting a quilt the easy way.
    There are also lots of videos about using an ordinary machine to quilt.
    Hope this helps, good luck. I haven't used spray and I tend to use those curved safety pins.
    I did some sewing this morning but then went out to lunch and haven't done any more since.
