Dishwasher costs

  • My wife always claimed it was a luxury rather than a necessity.

Then ours failed, terminally. A new one had been ordered within 12 hours.

Family of four, two teenagers, all cooking done from scratch, we usually run it twice a day. I put a meter on it to measure the electricity consumption and I reckon it was less than 10p, and I buy cheap tablets that cost less than 10p each. We aren't on a water meter, but every report claims they use less water than hand washing, and we're in a soft water area so wouldn't need salt were we not using 3-in-1 tablets anyway.

We had one installed a year ago - it's changed my life! And no more arguments about whose turn it is to wash up or if the dishes haven't been cleaned properly.

Aren't you arguing as to who empties it? Because that's the problem here, I hate doing it, I find it much more annoying than clearing up a few plates and cutlery every morning as the kettle boils than having to take it all out. My hubby said that if we used it, he would empty it, but it didn't happen. Then you have the kids who only help themselves from it for what they need (and even a couple of times caught them putting the dirty with the clean and pretending they hadn't realised it still had clean dishes.....)

I will be much happier when I move house and can fit a dishwasher in my kitchen! At the moment I can't open the washing machine door at the same time as OH opens the oven :rotfl:

  • We had a choice of a tumble dryer or a dishwasher when we moved. Went for a dryer as there's only two of us, wish we had room for both but I'd miss the cupboard space.

    OH will have to do!

My wife loves our dishwasher. Well, I think so, she tells me so and she has been married to it for the last 25+ years!

I'm with Lil Elvis, can't see the point. Only two of us in a small bungalow, if we have a family 'do' we all go out to eat. How does it save money? A little less water maybe, but it has to heat the water, then there are the tablets. False economy, I think. I may be older than most here, but I can wash and clear away more dishes in less time than it takes to fill and empty the machine. There is already enough hot water in my boiler to do the job.
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.

There are only two of us. I had one when there was only one of us, and a cat.

I hate washing up, so does my dad. It's probably genetic.

It's not me that can't see the point, it's my husband!

I simply made it clear to him that if he didn't want the dishwasher to be used then he would have to do all the washing up himself. I've stuck to my resolve, pretty much, for 10 years even though I haven't worked for most of them. He comes home to a work surface covered in dirty cups, pans and plates every day.

I got a huge kiss yesterday because I had done the washing up - it is a momentous occasion in our household, and generally happens with less frequency than spotting pigs flying overhead!

The arguments will really start when we have the kitchen remodelled as, in my opinion, space will still need to be left for a dishwasher as any future buyer of the house would expect one. I'm hoping to distract him from the issue with the huge and expensive cooker I will be installing :)

I absolutely would never be without a dishwasher. Ours is a Bosch, about 18 years old, so we will no doubt have to replace it sooner rather than later, but it performs well at the moment. We also use Aldi tablets as they are excellent. They are actually very cheap to run and don't use that much water.

I also have no doubt that items cleaned in a dishwasher are far cleaner and more hygienic than anything done by hand. Everything comes out spotless. Hand washing cannot possibly be as clean or efficient.

We have a slimline which gets run about every 3 days, but we still end up hand washing the saucepans, baking trays, chopping boards, plastic lunchboxes and chopping knives. It's handy in that one person can do all the washing up, we're not blessed with much counter space and there's not much space on the drainer once all the other things we don't deem dishwasher safe get done.

I'm not bothered about the power or water usage. I love my dishwasher. No hand wash can get glasses as clean as a dishwasher can. I have a slimline one, me and 2 kids here. I use it every other day, sometimes every day at weekends. I use Aldi Magnum dishwasher tablets, they're great.
