I'm on a year £14.99 with free wireless router, with 4 months to run. Negociated this when I threatened to leave (was paying £24.99). Don't want to leave as I have frequently and always regretted it - last time to tiscali who were rubbish! Would love to get the free laptop if I can wangle this in March

    Hi magicdeano

Yes it was a 2 year contract which i didnt mind, but it's not worth my while uping my package to £19.99 from £9.99.

I am currently considering signing up for this as I am yet to upgrade to broadband and a new laptop would be nice.Seeing as most broadband packages average out at £15-20 per month this seems a pretty good offer. Only drawback is 2 year contract. If you have already signed up to this how are you finding things so far?Is the service ok?Is the laptop itself ok?Did you bother paying the extra for a faster processor/more memory etc.?Do you now wish you went elsewhere for the broadband and bought the laptop seperately? Thanks in advance!
  • I signed up - got migrated to them 5/10/2007 and left on the 7th working day (ie end of legal Cooling Off Period) as it was a truly dreadful service FOR ME.

    Good points:
    1. Potential to get a laptop worth say £450 for min of £5/m supplement for 24m = 24*5 ie £120, so a gain of up to £300 for pain of being with AOL.
    2. They did refund the £££ I'd paid towards the laptop within the promised period after my cancelling.

    Bad points:
    1. Bombarded with leaflets/booklets/pamphlets/letters/etc for first few weeks - though hopefully that problem would go away with time.
    2. I had a solid 3.5Mbps synch but for 80% of each day I was only getting speedtest results of around 10% of that and whole experience was sluggish; though for about 5% of each day I would get the deserved 80%+ of synch.
    3. Repeated escalation to first and second level support drew at best a number of feeble stories/excuses; at worst downright lies.
    4. Non UK based first line support
    5. They finally CLAIMED it would take a visit from an engineer to my house to resolve this - despite my having had a working BT ADSLmax circuit working just fine for previous year with only difference being ID/password/ADSL-type in my router! (I then baled out and moved to o2 Broadband and have a 3.5-3.8Mbps circuit which delivers 80%+ of that synch for 99% of the time!)
    6. Apparently AOL didnt actually USE the MAC code to migrate me to AOL but just "hijacked" my line. Hence my previous provider didn't automatically know I was migrated and stop billing me. Fortunately the previous provider (Eclipse) were very understanding and refunded me back to the true migration date, but that could have been a significant hassle.
    7. Committed for two years.

Personally I decided I didn't need that grief from an ADSL provider, let alone from my phone service provider (albeit only CPS rather than line provision) and regard myself as very glad I got out while I still could. Have been very very pleased with my move to o2 Broadband instead.

Others hopefully have a better experience, but personally I greatly regret the three weeks of broadband/dial-up hassle caused by my decision to consider the laptop bribe.
  • i might give it a go just have to remember to ring them and haggle

Remember though, the laptop is not really free. This is why you have to up your package to £19.99, the service you'll get will be identical to your current £9.99 one. You need to think if you want to stay with AOL for another 2 years and take the deal you will be paying £10 extra a month which works out at £240 for the laptop.

I have seen the laptop and it is very good value for £240, It's dell. Appears to be very well built and a nice specification. Ample for anything you'd want to do with it bar play the latest games.

I already own a similarly specced laptop from dell which I bought for £320 a few months before AOL started doing this offer. I now pay AOL £9.99 a month for 8MB Broadband on an 18 month contract.
  • An advert in the local Metro has this offer but you can take a PS3 instead.

  • I am currently on AOL Platinum at £24.99 p/m.

I called today saying I wanted to cancel, and was offered the £9.99p/m for 6 months then £14.99 p/m thereafter. But no mention of a laptop. I said I would think about it and call them back once I have compared prices.

Should I phone back and mention that if I get a laptop I will not cancel ?

The free laptop offer is a Carphone Warehouse offer, not an AOL offer. You should call Carphone Warehouse or go in to a store, if you want the free laptop package.
