If you cancel the service early is there a larger cessation fee to cover the cost of the laptop or is it still a standard one (not sure what this is though)

If you choose to cancel the 24 month contract early, you will still have to pay the remaining months subscription until the end. The is the "buy out" fee. As for the laptop, either you pay the RRP to keep it or give it back.

It is if you're in the market for a laptop anyway, plus are happy to stay with AOL for two years.

It works out that (very roughly, because it depends on the price plan you go for), you pay about an extra £10 a month for the laptop price plans compared to the non-laptop plans.

£10 a month over 2 years is of course £240. Now I don't know this for sure, but I'd hazard a guess that £240 is more or less trade price of the said laptop. So it's not really costing AOL anything, yet they get to lock you in to a nice 2 year contract. Dell, of course, suddenly have a retail presence and increase customer awareness of their brand, not mention they money they'll make on the "optional upgrade" that they're hoping you go for. And finally, you get a brand spanking new laptop. So everyone's happy, petit dejeuner. Quite clever, I think.

Has anyone successfully signed up to this service and actually received their laptop?

I have had no end of trouble getting the order sorted, I signed up over a week ago and my order has still not been progressed due to a system "glitch". It might be resolved by next Tues but this is the 3rd time it might be resolved.

Every call to the CW online sales centre bring a differnt moronic explanation.

Sneaking in with a question/comment. I noticed that the laptops are loaded with Vista. Is my recollection that there is a problem with moving files between Vista and the older Windows operating systems? Cos if so, the free laptop might be more trouble than it's worth, given that I work on work files at home.

I took up this offer without reading the small print-beware !
The cost is £19.99 /month with AOL Talk basic package ,broadband and free laptop.The Talk package is optionally but will bump the monthly charge up to £29.99/month if you choose not to take it. I opted for the AOL Talk "free evening & weekend package which is now costing me £ 22.49/month -minimum 2 year contract.

Please note AOL are currently offering the same package as I have taken out minus the laptop for £9.99/month for 6 months-thereafter £14.99 /month. Looks as though I will be paying approx £210 for the privilege of having a "free laptop "!!!

i guess that's better than paying £300 outright for a laptop thou? £210 is pretty cheap for a decent(ish) laptop.

I considered this offer - but i tend to move around quite a bit (bad luck with roommates!) so a 24 mth contract is well out of the question for me....
