  • Thank you guys and gals. Just been to the doctor and have a hip xray tomorrow as really hurting now. He said not too hard for the new mattress and that I should be sleeping in the mattress and not on it. I phoned the local bed shop and am popping in after my xray for a lie down ;) he said going from 800 pockets to 2000 is too much, especially with a dicky back and hips. He reckons 1000 but I will try some out. I am thinking 1200 or 1500 max. Its a minefield !

You should seriously think about a memory foam mattress. Lots of physios and osteopaths recommend them. I love my Tempur mattress.

Your doctor may be an expert on the human body, but sorry to say he/she is not so knowable about mattresses.

The more springs up to 2000 generally the better, as there are more springs supporting your body weight.

But he's very correct in saying you want to sleep IN it NOT on it.

2nd time in a week that I've finally heard the medical profession say do NOT go for a hard mattress. Something that I've been trying to preach for 15 years.

The factory beds website referred to in the early posts comments about spring counts vs likely weight of the sleepers, and says that the two should be taken into account together. It gives some suggestions for different weights.

You can get 1000 spring count that are rock solid, likewise you can get 1000 spring count mattresses that are soft.

You also have to bear in mind that they are selling via the web without the ability to try the product out. So they pitch there sales speak to adjust to suit web selling.

Trying a product out in store is always the way forward. While I appreciate that 5 mins in store is not the same as sleeping on it all night. It's still 1,000 times better then not trying it out.

Surely it stands to reason that the more springs the better level of support, whats taking more pressure on the hand, a 1 hand push up or a 2 handed push up.

    Interesting thread.

Would anyone know if it's possible to buy a Visprung or Relyon cheaply online?

    Thanks in advance :)
  • Has anyone actually got one of this type of mattress? Meant to be a bit better than standard memory foam, very reasonably priced, but not really in showrooms to try.
    Any comments very welcome.
    Thanks.

Very doubtful, Visprung certainly would want you to try their products in very boutique style stores.

Online and mass savings just cheapens the product, not the image they are trying to project. Bit like buying a cheap Rolex!

Not sure about Relyon, you may find them online somewhere.

I have seen Vi-Sprung on ebay, but have my doubts to

    a) is it really a Vi-Sprung product or just a fancy looking mattress with a replica label.

    b) If it really is a Vi- Sprung, where did it come from? Doubt the guarantee will be valid.

The drawback with Ikea beds is that they are European measurements, so most UK bedding will not fit.
This is no longer the case, they now do “normal” sized beds and bedding (I recently bought a standard KS fitted sheet and duvet cover from them).

We went for this mattress and having slept on it for a few weeks we’re really happy with it:

Med/Firm, Pocket sprung and with a memory foam top, very reasonable price.

I have to say the company (or at least their delivery contractor) were pretty appalling though. The first two mattresses had been dragged along the ground and the protective plastic had been worn through on one corner leaving a big brown gash. The 3rd one was packed in plastic and cardboard and was fine but a guy turned up to deliver it on his own so I had to help the poor chap get it into the house!
  • Well, I went to my little independent retailer. He is trying to flog me a siesta bed ( says they have won lots of awards. ) he didn't even let me near a Restus which makes me think he has big commission on Siesta, the one he recommended was Siesta Knightbridge 1000 pocket springs with Aloe Vera hand tufted, Pinky, or anyone with experience- have you heard of Siesta beds. ? It was very comfortable and I only went on my own so unsure of how it would feel with heavier hubby on board. I am 9 and a half stone but it felt supportive but not board like, thanks in advance x
