Anyone notice that the buy to let landlord suing foxtons was also a lecturer ....

If that was a reference to me, I have never used an agent to manage any of my properties. I have in the past occasionally used them (not Foxtons) to find tenants (at the same time as me, by adding their fee to the rent).

No chuck, it was in reference to the story this week that Foxtons are being seriously sued by a Law lecturer at KCL over rip off charges for a light fixture replacement.

LAs cheerfully rip off both tenants and LLs so good to see some of their ridiculous charges come under scrutiny.

I think their business model targets higher end LLs who don't read their contracts properly, and people who've just moved to London and don't know their reputation for shafting tenants.

Of course I realise that, but I also thought that perhaps he was pointing out that the person in question was a lecturer because I'm also a lecturer (and Padington knows that, or should do).

I didn't know you were a lecturer. I guess this LL's being a Law academic made the story good, given the hazy knowledge of housing law and deliberate use of vaguely-legal sounding terminology for which LAs are famed (I was once told it "wasn't legal" for me to make direct contact with my own LL).

One current issue for selling agents is the lack of property to sell.

    Of course, just joshing.

Whilst you're all here and it looks like I shall soon have to come of age and become a responsible landlord from an offer being accepted on a very cute investment property in Hove ( almost went for your Worthing advice Purch but fell in love with one in Hove) , may I ask, where is the best information on managing a buy to let to be found ?

I don't like using agents and would rarely recommend them, but in your circumstances I would use an agent, at least to start off with, until you come up to speed. Also there is some distance between you and your property, do you have a local contact down there? If you haven't then it is probably worth having an agent, we use BG (British Gas) home maintenance on all our properties, for central heating and water/drains, they will come out if you or your tenant calls them, we don't use them for electrics (I used to be an electrician) or kitchen appliances (we just buy new ones if they develop faults), but you could consider those too. Joining either the RLA or NLA (I am in the NLA), I used to be in the RLA, which has its own forum for members, both are a good source of information, as both will give advice when needed.

    Congratulations, padington.

May it be the first of many.
Don't blame me, I voted Remain.
