  • Having recently parachuted in from elsewhere I am surprised to find that having entered a reply to a post which has then been followed up by others the author of the post can then delete their post rendering some subsequent posts incomprehensible.

I was use to the idea that you could edit a post up to 30 minutes after you made it but then you could no longer access it.

Looking at some other boards that also get a high volume of traffic and don't have limitless resources, what about restricting the viewing of the forum to only those members that are logged in?

Moving over to a completely new board without being able to keep your username isn't a bad thing unless you !!!!!! it up like EA did recently but the less said about that the better.

Oh and I'm all for archiving the current forum and eventually doing away with it all together, is perhaps a years time.
  • But in this case it is a bad thing, because theres so many members, that it would cause a big disruption, since everyone would have to reregister. Which would be clever because its bound to upset people.

The suggestion for using phpBB and using the YaBB 1.3 to phpBB module sounds like a much more feasable solution, that or simply just upgrade YaBB SP 1.3.1 to SP 1.3.2. I personally would recommend the latter to start with, then move onto phpBB, gradually weening everyone onto a better forum system.

Though phpBB does have its flaws, they can be remedied.

To know what software is best wouldn't we first have to know what the intended future of the forum is?

Is it inteded that this should be a little forum that runs quietly alongside the main site?
Or is it intended that this site become larger with as large a number of users as it possibly can have?

I quite like the idea that these forums becoming bigger - Companies might think twice about giving bad service if they knew a large number of consumers were coming here and becoming well-informed.

If the intention is for this site to become much larger, then surely ease of administration is the only consideration - even if the choice is the most inconvienent for regular users in the short term

It would be great to have the features provided by more advanced chat forum software, like proper subscription management for threads

and perhaps will help give more control over moderation of threads, to help eliminate spammers quicker and cut down on the number of duplicate threads in different forums.

how about a format like this or this

I don't agree there, if is of administration was the only concern, then you'd find less people signup here.

You need a combination of both, are there are many forums out there that will provide both - AND better security then phpBB

If you want a tidy, simple (mod_rewriteable) cms for the main site I suggest phpWCMS.
