Another option that hasnt been considered so far is to:

Completely archive this yabb chat making it searchable only. You are lucky in that 1. most of the offers & links quickly expire. 2. posters generally repeat the same offers over and over, this also applies to technical help also.

You will then be free to add a new forum (whichever you decide) which will quickly be filled with new post's. If people want / need to link into the old forum they will be able to.

    Excellent idea. :)

More often than not it's the simple ideas which are best. As has already been pointed out if you are looking to "upgrade" what you've already got you are limiting yourself to compatability issues. Where as by the very nature of this forum a clean break would present much more choice, albiet at the cost of members having to sign up to the new system.
  • Perhaps a way could be found to automatically transfer current member names across.

What other disadvantages of changing software can anyone think of?

Now I don't necessarily see it as a disadvantage, as we all know Martin is slightly changing the format's of the boards, board guides & Mod's etc. So going over to a new system will potentially enable a clean / fresh start and the saying "Start as you mean to go on..... " springs to mind. ;D

Heres a good start PHP BB it also has convertors from Yabb 1.3.1

PHP Nuke is another content management system which wouldn't limit you to just a forum.

It might be that you are not prepared to move from cgi type scripting to PHP, you will have to discuss server compatability issues with Brendan.

me 2! Now we can all tell how Martin must feel! lol
  • phpBB is okay for a forum system, however its not as stable as Invision Power Board (I don't know if that has YaBB portability though).

As for PHPNuke or PostNuke, they have extremely high security risks, and are prone to attacks. So I wouldn't recommend it for anything at all.

I personally would opt for Invision Power Board with a CMS like Mambo Open Source, or even a custom portal (since then you can customize all the elements, and you wouldn't be wasting unnecessary utilities).
