I hate Christmas. Who's with me?

I really, really hate it. I'm estranged from my parents and usually spend it alone, sometimes on call for work which isn't so bad. It's a family time and reminds me what I am missing, which is very painful.
I feel very out of place at friends'. I tend to end up lying to people I don't know well, eg at work and pretending I'm not on my own! Which probably shows great weakness of character but it's too painful to talk about.Mortgage overpayments 2018: £4602, 2019: £7870

I don't hate it. I enjoy the time off work, and a yummy roast dinner (and did I say Harveys Bristol Cream ....). But it just doesn't feel the same as it did years ago.
Can i just say that I am so with you on this one... Its gorgeous!0 -
Christmas is the one day of the year when I feel a bit vulnerable, because if I needed to get to anywhere a taxi would cost a small fortune!
That's not quite true. As an ex-taxi driver people often said to us how expensive they expected it would be to catch a cab over Christmas. If you're jumping in a Private Hire car they can charge more or less anything they think they'll get away with. But in a Black Cab the Council sets the rates and the drivers have to stick to it. It probably varies from Council to Council but most probably it'll be clock and half. So a fare which would usually be £5 maybe £7.50 or a £10 fare will be £15.
I always use to say to passengers a taxi maybe an expensive way to travel if you're by yourself but if there are 4/5 people, it's probably cheaper than getting a bus.
The extra you pay on Bank Holidays is most probably no more than someone working in a shop; office; or factory may get.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,

I am exceptionally lucky to have a wonderful DD (11) and DS (3) BUT it is a manky time to be single.
I personally blame the incessant repeats of "love actually" which is a film I do indeed love but flipping heck. :rotfl:0 -
Haven't "done" Xmas for years. I always used to work it - the money was brilliant!
We have a fresh tree with lights (no tinsel) for 2 weeks either side of the date we have our family gathering. Due to family members working abroad/for the emergency services that can be from anytime in mid November till mid January. :rotfl: We eat 1 festive meal (which lasts all day) and don't buy any other Xmas food. No Santa (DD is almost 4). Just a few token gifts for her, adults don't buy for each other.
This year our Xmas will be done and dusted by 8th December. Can't wait to see how DD's teacher copes with that!!!! :rotfl:Trying to be a man is a waste of a woman0 -
Shall I just say - I don't like what it has become. In particular, I don't like the length of time it goes on. Advent has disappeared. Apart from Hallowe'en, which has become heavily Americanised, nothing else gets discussed for many weeks beforehand. And for what, ultimately? A spend-fest?
If it wasn't for going to church, enjoying carols, trying to focus on what it really means, I'd rather be rid of it altogether.Ær ic wisdom funde, ær wearð ic eald.

I am not religious so do not celebrate it any more than I would any other religious festival, it all just feels fake to me and rather competitive.
Not meaning to cause WW3 btw, just a place where other Grinchers can come and moan along with me - and I have no qualms with others celebrating it. The only positive I can see to Christmas is spending time with family, but you can do that any day without using Christmas as a reason
We don't have little children in our house, there is just me and Husband, and can understand the excitement for little ones
For christmas lovers there are other threads where the joy can be spread x
With you 110% - this is EXACTLY how I feel. I feel we have 'done' Christmas as our kids are grown and have kids of their own.
we buy the kids and grandkids 'stuff' throughout the year - we don't need a special day to do that. and quite frankly the kids get 'overloaded' and hyper - the 'meal' is a lot of stress for whoever is cooking it and I just think the whole concept is more for the Retailers than the public.0 -
Thats exactly how I feel.
I love the traditional parts of it, carols, mince pies, family & friends getting together & sharing traditional meals & dishes.
Childrens excitement at santa & presents.
I HATE with a passion the commercialism of it all.
Adults stressing over buying other adults presents, usually of the same value, why bother..... shopping, wrapping, stress, money problems.
Just enjoy the simple old fasioned traditions.
This a million times over! :T:T:T
I love Christmas for those reasons too (bolded.) But do acknowledge that some people are alone/lonely and Christmas is a sad time for them. And also that some people are not lonely and sad, but just can't be bothered with it so much.
And I also agree with the rest of your post.About people overspending and stressing and trying to outdo other people etc...
I agree with raven though; although I love it, I am also sick of people on my FB posting 145 days til Christmas, 17 weeks til Christmas yada yada yada, and I have unfollowed them so I don't have to see that crap. It should be outlawed to even mention it until AFTER Halloween! It just ruins it!!!Proud to have lost over 3 stone (45 pounds,) in the past year! :j Now a size 14!
