Some people are quite happy being on their own.
Being pressured into 'joining in' when you don't want to is far worse.
    Absolutely agree, Jackie.

Although it's not quite the same thing, many years ago I mentioned to my friend's Mum that me and my OH were spending Christmas on our own (our idea of the prefect Christmas).

She was horrified and insisted her daughter invite us round to their house for Christmas dinner - which would have been her & OH, 3 grown up kids, their partners and several kids.
Our absolute idea of hell on earth.

My friend laughed and said 'Mum, it's how Polly and Mr Polly like it.'

I get so much pressure from work to attend the Christmas party, it was easier just to book holiday and go away for the weekend than continually try to decline on the basis that I don't like Christmas parties.
Like another poster, we used to go away to the Canaries for Christmas to avoid the worst of it but those holidays are now reserved for employees with kids (I don't mind that really).
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

I hate pubs in the run-up to Christmas.

Full of people who've clearly never been in one before in their life, shouting & screaming, staggering about, stepping on your feet, spilling their drink down your back, vomiting in the toilets (that's if they can manage to get that far).

You only see them for a few weeks.
I don't know where they go to for the rest of the year but I wish they'd !!!!!! off back.

Lol a bit like church :rotfl:
Never again will the wolf get so close to my door

    Surely that's not legal!

    Legal?

Employers can impose whatever holiday dates they like on you as long as it doesn't break your contract or discriminate against you for age, race, religion etc.
TBH holidays to the Canaries are half the price before and after Christmas so no big loss to me.

Discriminating by means of whether you have children or not is discrimination.
  • I've enjoyed Christmas more since my family agreed a few years ago not to buy presents for each other, so I only have my two grown up sons and husband to buy for, plus small gifts for a couple of friends. In practice, I still buy my elderly parents a couple of nice foodie bits, but don't want them to have the stress of reciprocating. Husband and I don't spend a lot on each other as it just gets out of hand, so we just think of one fairly inexpensive thing we would like. Christmas to me is seeing family and just having a nice day. This year my husband and I are going out for lunch for the first time ever, and I've said to him that if we like it, we'll make a habit of it. My extended family don't live near us, so we travel on Boxing Day to my parents and we go out for lunch then as well. It's really quite relaxing these days.

I'll gladly admit I hated Christmas. I'd loathe it with a passion. Then at the back end of 2011 I was diagnosed with cancer and since then I've thrown myself into each Christmas with much more enthusiasm. I'm not fussed about the presents, I'm just happy to spend time with friends and family.

    WOW!
I think that puts things into perspective.

    Have a great one. :santa2:
