Tesco refund policy

I tried to return a LED light bulb to Tesco today. I bought 3 of them for £4.50 each and this one failed almost immediately. The service desk refused to refund it, not on the grounds that I didn't have the receipt, although I didn't but could show the entry on my debit card statement, but on the grounds that I would have to have the packaging because it was impossible to process without the product code. The shop no longer stocks that bulb but they said that I could try a bigger branch to get the details. My feeling is that this policy does not comply with consumer law as it is not reasonable to expect to keep the packaging on a light bulb and the fact that they can't process a refund is not my problem. Is the retailer the product was bought from not obliged to refund the faulty item ?

  • So you just took in a bulb?

How do they know you bought that bulb from them, with no packaging?

You don't have a Tesco receipt with a transaction number. It could be a bulb you just took out of a bin. How long have you had the bulb?
  • A bank statment will show the amount and where it was spent it will not show the product. They will need the code off the item so they can check it against their stock system to see how much it was and its the correct item before issuing a refund. Its not tescos fault you didnt keep the receipt or the box as without it you cannot prove it was bought from them.

And if the bulb failed immediately surely you will still be able to get the box out the bin ans most people will keep the bulb in thr box until they use it.

    Oh for heavens sake..
  • You could have removed one of the other two from it's packaging and taken that along with the duff one.

I'm assuming they were all put in together therefore he has no packaging... or this is the last one he used. Otherwise I think he'd had done your suggestion instead of posting here (but I am ever optimistic...)

They will probably not give you a refund without a receipt but if they agree with what you say they may give you a Moneycard to the value of what you paid.
  • You need to show proof of purchase. It doesn't necessarily have to be a receipt. A bank statement would suffice. Read more about consumer rights here

I can't see Tesco giving refunds without receipts

    Are you sure?
  • Go to different Tesco. Buy a new bulb. Use it.

Hey presto, you also have a box and receipt to return the other bulb with.

Yes, I am sure. They won't give a refund but if they are content with what you tell them they will give a Moneycard which has to be spent in Tesco.
