talliwillow, my response to your circumcision thread

At the moment I am still trying to decide whether we should have it done as now there is a real child to consider, I am not sure if I would be able to put them through that.
I wrote a response to your enquiry, then found the thread closed by the time I got to post, I think there was some nasty stuff going on between some posters. But my post is with genuine intent so I feel it reasonable to put into a new thread for you.

I do fully appreciate there can be religious / cultural issues, and that in many ways such things are nobody else's business. But in the light of your words above I guess you are asking for people's feelings on the subject so I shall offer mine.

To me a child is a person in their own right, someone you never own but whose best interests (present and future) it is your duty to best serve till they are old enough to look after themselves. And to me making irreversible decisions about removing a part of someone (an incredibly personal part let's face it) long before they can have any understanding or say in the matter ... just feels wrong to me. It's not so much the operation itself, but presuming a body modification a young man may later wish had not been done to him.

I wish I'd seen that thread. Must have been interesting. Until about 5 years ago I assumed every man was circumcised. Didn't realise there were men walking about with skin hanging!

There is a strong case medically / healthwise for circumcision. I do however disagree with the crude and painful way it is often done. Even in Africa these days it is done in hospital days after the child is born and with no pain. I know there is no pain because the child comes out of the procedure with no tears as opposed to the heart breaking screams following the crude procedure I understand is undertaken in parts of this country.

On a personal level I would not become intimately involved with an uncircumcised man as it would look odd, even freakish to me. But that's me. I find it hard to believe a boy circumcised at birth could grow up to wish the skin had been left hanging!

So if you met a fab man that was ideal for you, you would turn him away if he hadnt been curcumsised? Thats just mad!

Ive asked quite a few of my guy friends and none of them have had it done. My partner has not been curcumsised and he is no way looks freakish down there! The skin doesnt hang and if its always been there your not going to know any different so probably wouldnt want to have it removed.

I dont understand why people do it to their children, could someone please explain to me? I know mostly is a religion thing but what are the reasons behind it? Im guessing its not a major health thing as my partners 32 and he's been just fine with his as it is.

surely it is there so that it can protect a sensitive part of the anotomy

dog`s tails cannot be docked so why is it legal to circumcise in non-medical situations

    I am puzzled

i must admit my partner has been circuncised (medical reasons) but my ex didn't and i much prefer my current partners. However i have a son and didn't the thought didn't enter my ehad about getting him done, if he medically needs it yes but for vanity's sake NO!

If a boy or man washes his penis every day then its clean so I dont think thats a reason to have the procedure done, unless its for health reason then thats different, people go up in the air when parents get their childs ears pierced when they are babies as they think its inhumane and say why dont you wait until they are older so can they decide for themselves, the same can go for anyone thinking of circumcising their son.

Why tamper with Mother Nature? If it's there and it's not causing any bother... what's the problem?

Maybe we should start taking out newborn babies appendixes out routinely too, just in case they get infected?

:rotfl: Good one! That's the best analogy I've heard as a case for leaving the foreskin alone.

Anyway, foreskin has been known to harbour a multitude of germs / bacteria. Someone mentioned that her partner has had it for 30-odd years with no problem. The problem is, men themselves tend to be good at resisting those kinds of infections - Its the women they 'lay' with who end up with the problems. Some of the symptoms in women don't surface for a while.

Mother Nature shouldn't always be left alone, unfortunately. For example, pubic hair in women apparently protects the front passage but can also trap unwanted foregin matter and result in infection. Shave it off! Also if you leave armpit hair then not only is it unsightly in my opinion (I appreciate it might be a turnon for others - urghh!) but it is more likely to smell than a clean shaven armpit. We have to help mother nature correct itself sometimes.

Mother nature just hasn't yet been dragged into the 21st century ;)

She still thinks we live in caves and choose mates based on how much they stink :D The sooner she gets with the program and evolves hairless legs, the better I'll be pleased :)

Too right! Hairless legs would save me hours of plaiting in the winter and shaving in the summer! laughing-smiley-014.gif

Re: circumcision - I'm interested in the way people have described the skin as hanging - that, to me, makes it sound like it is an extra piece that looks stuck on and awkward! It's an integral part of the penis and doesn't look at all odd or 'extra' to requirements (well dh's doesn't at least!)

I think the infection argument is a bit of a non-starter for me too because a condom would solve that issue anyway and I'd hate to give women the impression they are somehow safer riding 'bareback' if they choose a bloke without his foreskin!!! Unsafe sex is unsafe sex after all.

As for the wasing issue - I don't really get that one either. If we women can keep our bits clean (being behind doors so to speak) then I'm sure a bit of retractable skin isn't a barrier to men cleaning theirs.

Just my thoughts of course but I'd need a better reason than either of the above to have my son circumcised for anything other than medical reasons! I can empathise more with religious views than cleanliness ones, that's for sure, although I'm not in agreement with either.
