All it actually proves is the effect of a lowest common denominator. There are a lot of crappy drinking establishments out there, all Wetherspoons are doing is being equally crappy but cheaper too. The average UK pub goer has no class, or taste, so are price-led into these soulless drinking caverns.

    What a snob!

For goodness sake, how pretentious some people people can be!

I have eaten in some very upmarket places and not felt that got what I paid for. I have eaten in Wetherspoon's too, when I want a quick, reasonably priced meal. I have never been disappointed with my food there. Believe me, I have eaten in some places that most people never get to try, over the years, in my more affluent days.

I don't like our local one much as there is a tendency for some locals to hang around due to the cheap drink but I have been to some lovely Wetherspoon's, e.g. the one in Whitstable.

I really think that some people should get a grip and respond to the OP's actual comment which was about the inappropriate treatment of a member of staff. I do think that was out of order but having never seen it happen elsewhere, I would imagine it is down to the individual manager's attitude.

More affluent days being when you had your own BBC talk show Mr Partridge?

The fact that you can't tell the difference between "your" and "you're" speaks volumes.
"Your" precisely the sort of person that frequents dives like Wetherspoons. Thanks for proving my point for me :rotfl:
Errr... they were correct. :A Is that why you can't frequent Wetherspoon establishments? You fail the grammar check at the door and the bouncers deny you entry?
Q: What kind of discussions aren't allowed?
A: It goes without saying that this site's about MoneySaving.

Q: Why are some Board Guides sometimes unpleasant?
A: We very much hope this isn't the case. But if it is, please make sure you report this, as you would any other forum user's posts, to forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com.

    That was your first mistake.

So much fail on so many different levels.

An excellent meal in a Wetherspoons? What do you normally eat, Pedigree Chum?

Seriously what is wrong with you, you judgmental oaf. Just because you don't like wetherspoons, doesn't mean others can't. Grow up.

Either respond to the OP with a relevant and helpful post or shut up.

    Well said.

Some people need to get over themselves and stop being so high and mighty. Waste of space some people are.

JDW has a lot of respect from many in the industry and it has done much to promote real ale. It's a generally safe environment for families in the day and has allowed many small breweries and suppliers to thrive. The drinks are usually very well kept and the food output is above what I'd expect in a standard pub, it's hardly going to be home-made, but much isn't microwaved.

Equally it's usually not the best pub to go to in terms of engaging bar staff, although it can be. But what it has done is allow many pubs to remain open that might not have done. There is also no such thing as "an average UK pub goer", people are different and people often don't just go to one pub, they might visit a JDW either reasons of value or preference before moving onto another more traditional one.

    Today`s results:

Meanwhile Wetherspoons cheered the City with better than expected results, posting pre-tax profits up 3 per cent to £79.4 million in the year to July 27. Sales are also up a healthy 6.3% since the year end. The company took on 3,000 staff last year and paid out £29.2 million in bonuses and free shares. The firm currently has 927 pubs and expects to open up to 40 more this year.

The proof of the pudding.

I am going to claim that the second sentence wasn't in the original quote. It's certainly not there now!
