New "no disc" Car Tax rip off.

-
Cars in the trade aren't usually taxed anyway - hence the majority of used sales not involving transfer of tax. And, from next month, when they go into the trade, the tax will automatically be refunded to the previous keeper.
You would be surprised at how many cars are taxed on a used car forecourt...0 -
However I seem to remember from some years ago whereby a dealer could licence a new car from say the middle of a month and the disc expire 12.5 months later.
Or is my memory playing tricks on me?
Under the current system, a first licence for a new car can be for 12 months + '?' weeks. It allow sales through the month, rather than all on the 1st.0 -
That's happening next month. As per insurance, you buy 12mo of tax but pay monthly, rather than buy rolling monthly.choccyface2006 wrote: »Slightly off topic but I think its about time we have the option to pay for car tax by direct debit0 -

Who cares right, its only a tenner.....
If the motorist doesn't mind losing out then maybe ALL of the 30 million motorists in the UK could paypal me £1.00, once....it would be really cool !!!!
Well apart from anything, most people reclaim their tax anyway if they sell their car, particularly if they're trading the car in OR "sell" it to the new buyer but knock off a bit because they cant reclaim the current month.
So the real figure is nowhere near that.
Is this genuinely the biggest problem you have to worry about in life?0 -
For all those failing to see the problem with this, consider how easy it would be to put right. If, when a sale is notified, the tax was made to expire at the end of that month then:
The seller would still get the same refund
The buyer would be able to drive away (legally) immediately on the remains of that month, as they do now. For people who don't have smartphones (or even mobiles) / use the internet that's going to be a problem right now, especially in areas where there isn't a post office on every corner.
The overall VED raised would remain the same per car per year.
Very simple fix, very fair, and a very obvious system to use unless this is really about raising that extra month per sale.0 -

Simple. Because it'd hit businesses FAR too hard, especially the haulage industry.Neither, how about scrapping VED entirely and adding it to cost of fuel.
Add 12p to the cost of a litre of fuel to make it all balance out on average.
Now think about the cost effect on an HGV doing a couple of hundred thousand miles per year at 10mpg.
Now think about the cost effect on everything IN that HGV.
It'd probably cost you as much as you think you've saved.0 -
A long time ago, I made a decision to not worry about the things that I could do nothing about, and concern myself about the things that I could do something about.
This thread is representative of the former case.I think this job really needs
a much bigger hammer.
