New "no disc" Car Tax rip off.

The only thing that may cheat us all a bit more is that it will be easier with a monthly direct debit going out for the small increments of tax increase to take place as you don't experience the misery of needing to find a lump sum and also discovering that it is £10 more than it was for the last 6 months of tax.
It will just creep up gradually and in a stealthy manner over time.0 -
I've renewed my tax this morning online, it ran out last week at the end of August, so i'm going to be one of the last to get a paper disc, the changes are from the end of this month. So if i sell maybe i'll be able to leave the tax in place.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,
What it may grow to in time, I know not what.

Arrrr its all ok then...if its only going to effect 30% of the 2.7 million car sales each year at say £10 per sale for the owner and purchaser assuming the a low tax bracket (nothing in the £475 a year one which would be £40).....£16,380,000 of additional revenue the Government will make on each effected sale then assuming the seller has bought another car mid month also so had to pay another wasted month - another £8,190,000 = £24,570,000 BOOM - master stroke !
Who cares right, its only a tenner.....
If the motorist doesn't mind losing out then maybe ALL of the 30 million motorists in the UK could paypal me £1.00, once....it would be really cool !!!!"Dream World" by The B Sharps....describes a lot of the posts in the Loans and Mortgage sections !!!0 -
They're not going to make much money off me I'm afraid given that 1) I change cars about every 10 years or so and 2) my current shopping trolley is in the £0 VED band :rotfl:Now free from the incompetence of vodafail0

MAN THE BARRICADES!
I don't think anyone's getting that worked up.
But it *is* curious that we now have a completely automated, computerised system, where they've *decided* to charge a bunch more money, just for the sake of it, where they could *just as easily* have charged a fair amount.
I don't accept the argument that it's offsetting rises in VED, as I don't believe the government/DVLA are trying to draw attention to them double-charging for VED whenever a car's sold. I don't think it's sold as a "feature" of the new system.
It's not the end of the world, just another kick in the nuts from rip-off Britain.0 -
Or, to express that amount a way that Gov't accountants actually deal with when planning changes, £0.024bn. Compared to the ~£40bn that's raised a year from VED and fuel duty. Pocket change.
Your guesstimate of the extra revenue is less than VED evasion annually (£35m), despite that being at the lowest level for years, so it's VERY easy for them to bat away any complaints about the amount.0 -
Imagine how many forecourts of currently TAXED used cars that there are (that the trader has purchased whilst buying a car) none of this can be refunded to the original owner as their car is in 'trade' The trader cannot cash in as the car is not in their name, & the original owner cannot cash in as they don't have the tax disc... Ching ching :eek:0

Cars in the trade aren't usually taxed anyway - hence the majority of used sales not involving transfer of tax. And, from next month, when they go into the trade, the tax will automatically be refunded to the previous keeper.0

I doubt it - unless you intend selling the car before the end of this month.
My understanding is that if you sell a car with any VED left on it, it will be automatically cancelled and a refund for any complete months left.
If you were to sell a car say in mid-November with the VED due to expire at the end of November then, as above, the VED would be cancelled immediately - no refund at all given - and the new owner has to buy his/her own VED which would be charged from the beginning of the month.
What I read about the new system was that from 1st October NO unexpired VED could be passed on to a new keeper.
However I seem to remember from some years ago whereby a dealer could licence a new car from say the middle of a month and the disc expire 12.5 months later.
Or is my memory playing tricks on me?
Why could they not at least use 52 weeks if 365 days was too difficult for there grasp of maths?0 -
How about detecting the non-tax payers? Are they going to install ANPR cameras on every road junction in the country, even out in the sticks? And how will they tackle those who avoid having the car registered to them?
At least with a disc, there is the chance untaxed drivers will get noticed by the bobby on the beat or a CEO when they are parked up.
This move must be like winning the lottery to the determined illegal drivers amongst us.PLEASE NOTEMy advice should be used as guidance only. You should always obtain face to face professional advice before taking any action.0
