I'm thinking that anyone who can't tell a 17yo from a 33yo is a little challenged in the common sense department.

The rule is if someone looks under the age of 25. If the OP looked to be around 24, then ID would be asked for. That doesn't mean to say that OP looks 17 but the store and till operators must follow ASDA's procedures on the Under 25 rule.
  • Considering stores go on and on when training about the 'personal' £xthousand fine that you will get for serving alcohol to someone underage, when I worked at Marks and Sparks I pretty much ID'd everyone with their own teeth.

I didn't care if you don't have your ID. Thats not my problem. I'm not risking a fine or whatever the shop had threatened for nobodys pride.

If a shop assistant gets caught selling alcohol to a test purchaser, they will get fined £90 and get a criminal record. Some employers even give them disciplinary action.

When I managed a bar (I finished 6 years ago) the fine for the server was £1000

Exactly. Do I risk it or do I annoy everyone by ID'ing them? No brainer. I also believe its 'up to' £5000 now.

On another note, over 25 ladies LOVE being ID'd. They become your new best friends.

Its usually the blokes who find it an insult to their masculinity :P (no offense to any men who carry ID and are happy to show it)

I've been told its up to £5000 too, not sure how many people do actually get fined that amount, but even if it was £100, I personally wouldn't risk it.

What's with the pride and masculinity bit?

Do you really think that people do not carry photo ID for those 2 reasons? What a shallow thought process you have. I don't carry it for the simple reason that I do not normally wear the type of clothes that make it easy and safe to carry that item. If I go to the shops then I stick a £10 note in my top pocket and go like that, I don't normally carry a wallet. If I lose a tenner then tough. If I lose my licence then it is a hassle to have to get a replacement.
If I don't get served at one shop then there is always another where the staff are actually capable of and allowed to use common sense rather than being browbeaten into being unable to think and reason and having to follow the rules on threat of dire retribution from the company as appears to be the case in some places.
  • I just find it ironic that you did not meet the standard of your user name!

I find it ironic that you needed to go to the trouble to look up what it meant, considering I never did but just liked the sound of it.

I assume yours indicates your urge to stuff crap into your body and was intentionally chosen.
  • On the 05/09/2014 I went to Asda to buy alcohol and was refused service as I didn't look over 25 I am 33. I then returned to Asda later that day with my father to try and purchase alcohol. My father was then refused the sale as they knew it was for me. My father then asked to speak to the manager and the checkout supervisor then came across and the situation was explained to him. He also said that I didn't look over 25. My father then asked to speak to his boss and a woman came over who was also in agreement after having explained the situation that I also looked under 25. Whilst in discussion with the checkout supervisor's boss the guy advised us that "if we didn't like it to shop at Morrisons" Which came as a total shock to me. We were then spoken to Andy Roberts who is the duty manager at Asda and Andy gave us the same response about challenge 25 and how the checkout operative was right. Whilst this discussion was taking place two security guards were hovering over us & after words were exchanged we were manhandled and escorted out of the premises. My point is that If I was underage when it came to buying alcoholic beverages or if I appeared underage then I wouldn't attempt to buy it, Nor would I purchase alcohol If I was with my father. Due to said shopping experience will now use other supermarkets as advised by one of your employees and that Myself, My friends & family will no longer be going to Asda. I am also thinking of going to the police as I disliked being physically forced out of the premises.

Your username confuses me a bit. Wouldn't have been obvious not to go back with your dad but just go back with some ID?

They're not asked to ID people looking 17, it's 24 you know and it has been for years. How come you haven't noticed all the signs everywhere?

Seeing you haven't seen signs that have been in outlets & supermarkets for years (seriously years), you're not really in a position to criticize others of common sense are you!
