Restaurants playing music too loud

If you come into a restaurant that is known for being loud and fun, and you find yourself in a loud restaurant then whose fault is that?
Certainly not the restaurants!
Where I worked the music was set at a level determined by head office as it was a brand standard. It wasn't offensively loud, I could certainly hear perfectly well to take orders so fail to understand why people can't have a normal conversation.
If I'm a paying customer, I expect the staff to respond to my requests. I would certainly not give my custom and money to a business with that attitude.0 -
It's not about restaurants being 'fun', rather it's well known that if you play loud and fast music, people eat and drink more. They also tend to leave sooner. All of this increases profit.
Approximately 10% of people actively like musak whilst 20% actively dislike it. Double the number of people would rather loud music wasn't played whilst they're eating/shopping/drinking. That leaves 70% who don't care or don't notice. Because restaurants and bars know that loud music equals increased profits they lump the 70% in with the 10% and are then able to argue that only 1 in 5 of their customers doesn't like the blaring music.
Even more frustrating is that the effect of having to dine without music on someone who enjoys it is minimal; after a few minutes they'll cease to notice. On the other hand, someone whose ears are obliterated by Robbie Williams shrieking away won't cease to notice. In fact, they'll probably become more and more stressed.
A restaurant that doesn't take its customers' requests seriously and turn the music down if asked isn't creating a 'fun' atmosphere that 'customers want' - only 10% actually want it. Although I agree with you in principle about music being too loud in restaurants will annoy customers. The OP didn't visit a restaurant. They were at a "Yates wine bar"
I accept in a restaurant having no music or low music is the preferred experience for most customers, but being in a bar like Yates which cater for a certain clientele I would suggest that most customers would want music to be played. Quite possibly loudly!0 -

I might managers might notice, if a large group upped and left, if not responding to quieter times..Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..
