Restaurants playing music too loud

Is one of my irritations. When I go out for a meal with friends, relatives or colleagues, I like chatting with them. In establishments where the music is too loud, it's annoying as cannot hear each other and the waiters
On a few occasions, about three of us have approached the staff requesting the music to be lowered in volume and get the responses 'it's what other customers want'.
One pub chain, Yates, well the one we go to, the staff can change the volume in different areas.
We do not like music so loud that we cannot hear ourselves think and need to shout.
On two occasions we have left restaurants because the loud music and the staff deny it's too loud. Both times we have left when we haven't ordered anything.
When you play music at home when eating, you put it at a volume which is comfortable for the ear.
Is it just me and my friends etc that find loud music in restaurants annoying?

It annoys me a lot as well. However it does sound you go to places that are more a pub/bar than a restaurant and in those sort of places you tend to have to accept loud music. Especially on a weekend night.0 -

Pretty much any pub/bar can be called a restaurant these days. I tend to find a place that caters for both diners and people who are just in there for a drink e.g like a Yates, will play loud music to cater for the drinking crowd.
If you want to go to a restaurant to talk to friends you are best off going to a restaurant that is solely a restaurant as they tend to not have loud music.
It's annoying I accept but places like Yates like to attract a certain clientele that prefer music to be loud.0 -
Any restaurant with a dance floor is going to have loud music
Maybe avoid the pub chains which serve food and go to an actual restaurantI am a Mortgage Adviser

Got to admit I've experienced this too at an (allegedly) decent Italian restaurant chain, which is just a restaurant not a bar or otherwise. It's beyond irritating and I do wonder if it's to try and get diners to move on fast from the tables for the next lot to come in.

if it's too loud, you're too old ;-)0

take a loud hailer next time, and 'shout' over the noise.. management may take the hint!
on a serious note, if really loud, local environmental health dept at council may need to be informed..Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..

They'd only pay attention if neighbours complained. They aren't an "I'm a customer and the volume of the music wasn't to my liking "service.0 -
I've noticed this in shops too.
If the music is too loud, I won't bother stepping foot in there.Sealed pot challenge #232. Gold stars from Sue-UU - :staradmin :staradmin £75.29 banked
