How do you get your own music library onto your iPad i.e. your own CD collection?
I knew we'd get to your actual question eventually...

I'm not sure if you can rip CDs and transfer the music onto an iPad via another means than iTunes on a PC (Windows or Mac). However, I don't put music onto my iPad; I wouldn't use mine for that: (a) it's a bit unweildy to carry around just for music, and (b) mine's 16 GB isn't enough for a lot.

    As for other content:
    • Videos: I stream movies from a NAS drive rather than store them locally.
    • Apps: As already mentioned, you can download apps directly onto the iPad.
    • Photos: I've taken photos on the iPad and uploaded them using hotmail, and you can transfer in the reverse direction if you like, too.
    • Other files: As mentioned you can use DropBox for file transfer.
So, whether you need iTunes on a PC (Mac or Windows) depends upon your use.

Apple's offical answer would be that they only support iTunes (plus probably some sales pitch about iTunes) but there are many 3rd party applications that allow you to manage the contents of your iOS devices

I don't think they are the best at customer service.
My mail wouldn't come through on my iPhone 4 last year. After looking on the forums, I couldn't find a solution. When I called Apple, as I was out of warranty, the operator wanted to charge me £25. When I enquired what I would get for that, I was told he would look on the forums (the same ones I had just been on). When I asked 'why would I pay for that(when I have just done that and not found a solution)' He didn't answer, so I asked for a manager. On the plus side, they waved the fee :).

I haven't had to call any other companies (android/Microsoft) so can't comment on them.

I have an iPhone 5c. I like apple products, but not apple. If your partner likes apple, then get him one.If he has an iPhone, they all sort of tie in with each other. Plus, you can buy a few things for it at xmas(like keyboards, remote toys ect). I think he'd be happy that you tried and I don't think he( even if he didn't like it) would say no.

My apologies if my original question "So how do you get music, videos, photos and apps etc onto your iPad without using iTunes?" was too vague for you.
  • Let's please keep this thread relevant to OP's question and not start personal wars on whether you need iTunes or not.

    Thank you.

I think we have now established that you don't have to have iTunes to get those things onto your iPad.
