Random question for you all...
My work team do lots of charity fundraising each year (to the point of being too much and annoying). They have started this week with a 'guess the number of sweets' competition and we are all having to take a turn in the canteen doing this. As well as the number they are offering a guess the weight competition too (winner gets a bottle of 'champagne').
Now as much as I'm happy to raise money for charity they are asking £2 a guess for each of these which I think is a horrific price. Personally I'd have said 50p a guess or £1 max. If people want to spend £2 they'd take a few guesses for it.
Am I allowing my time at MSE to make me grippy or do you think it's justified to grudge such a high cost?
The other thing I object to with the charity stuff is when they basically force you to join in. Been told there is a Halloween day event, you can either pay £2 to come in fancy dress or (in their words) if you're boring and don't dress up you're fined £5... I'm actually thinking of taking the day off to avoid it!

Morning all,
Standing here making marrow and ginger jam. Well I had to do something with the remainder of the giant marrow I was given!
I'm using this recipe:
http://www.rivercottage.net/recipes/courgette-marrow-and-ginger-jam/
The dyeing worked quite well. The already blue trousers came out fine and so really did the skirt. I just didn't read the bit that says 'polyester thread won't hold the dye' and so I have a navy skirt with white stitching. It looks quite good actually. Just not what I expected
I've got a photo here but not sure if the link will work.

If it doesn't, can someone please tell me how to do it
Back to school for me tomorrow. At least it is only two days to ease me back to early mornings gently.
Happy Wednesday0 -
Afternoon all,Need to measure the windows for curtains, I really don't like them and in the previous house we didn't have/need any at all. Now we're in the country with no street lights and nets are not enough for winter. I have no idea about anything to do with curtain measuring so the plan is to take photos of all the windows and measure everything, write it on the photos and give them to a curtain maker to figure it out.
Hubby thinks I'm strange. I probably am but I don't care.
Not much to add from me today. Still waiting for a decision from hubby about changing utilities. £320 is a lot of money to save on just making a switch but I need to get the go ahead from him first cause if something goes wrong, i'll get the blame. He doesn't like change and seeing as though it will be my own bank account it will be set up using, I'd better ok it with him first.
Onwards and forwards,
have a great day all. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

Sounds very excessive. I wouldn't be at all in favour of either. Charity should be for who YOU wish to give it to not be forced into itNOT BUYING IT 2018!
Consumerism is.....buying things you don't need with money you don't have to impress people you don't know and probably wouldn't like even if you did know them.0 -

Totally with you on this LJ, I think it all gets out of hand. Now a sponsored pub crawl is something I WOULD get involved in :rotfl:
I guess people must be more generous than me (or more susceptible to peer pressure), we took about £40 on our 45 minute stint and there was already £70 from yesterday. I did feed back to my manager that I felt it was a bit high a price and a few of the others agreed so I know I'm not alone.
I don't really have anything helpful to suggest regarding your issues with the OH's job situation. My mum is a school teacher and having a horrific time too, they have cut the classes in the subject she teaches to teh point where she is a portion of a teacher meaning she can be moved to any other school in the region. She is currently travelling between two schools which are a lengthy drive in bad roads and frankly I believe it's a matter of time before she's signed off with the stress of it
Sadly I don't just think it's in education but that people in general are not valued as they should be. Our society has developed such a 'throw away' mind set that even people are expendable now.

I would not be taking part! As others have said, giving to charity should be a personal decision and not forced. It's not easy to say 'no thank you' but it's worth it, once you say it once then it gets easier. You may be labelled 'boring' but it's your money. I really hate these office based charity events.
Thanks for the advice and suggestions about curtains/window coverings. With a bit of luck my measurements will allow me to have ready made curtains. Trouble is the walls are so thick that the poles will have to extend beyond the window frame a fair way to be fixed to the wall.
Off home soon and not back until Tuesday. :j0 -
Afternoon all,
Spent the morning making various phone calls to do with the renovation house, council tax,BG etc,and then making my elderberry cordial.Bunged a few blackberries in for good measure, then bottled it but popped a bit on my greek yogurt first.Hopefully it will ward off nasty coughs and colds during winter.Wonder what elderberry vodka tastes like:think:...theres loads more yet
I was shattered yesterday after minding DGS.He wants to be on his feet and walking round furniture so you cant pop him in the walker or high chair for 5 mins peace without him protesting, though he did have a decent sleep mid morning thank goodness :rotfl:I just about managed to get tea ready for the troops because I did a beef joint in the sc and peeled the spuds while he slept, then got it sliced/gravy made when they came in,the beef was overdone though. His Mummy enjoyed her 1st day back from Mat leave, said it was much less tiring
Hopefully I'll be more organised next week.
Just pottering around this aft, making a pie with the rest of the beef for tea,and looking at things for the new house online, need to source stuff as cheap as poss.Time for a coffee first though:)
TTFTM,what a shame for DH,seems like an awful lot of educational establishments are the same, make life uncomfortable for people to hasten them on their way because they were expensive
Hugs to those in need x:heartsmil 'A woman is like a teabag: You never know her strength until you drop her in hot water'. (Eleanor Roosevelt)0 -
Back again.
Well I'm very pleased with the jam. would thoroughly recommend the recipe.
TTFTM - I totally agree with you. All education is targets and statistics! I wonder how far down the pan the education system has to go before the powers that be realise the mess that we are in? A fresh start sounds lovely though. My DH would be VERY jealous!
Lynsayjane - Yep, much too expensive. I HATE being made to feel I should donate too.0 -

Is there nothing you can do to attach a piece of skirting above the window for putting the rail on? though to be honest, if you're in the country and have a nice view a longer pole would allow the curtains to open enough to stop it blocking any of the view. It all depends on the layout of the room etc.
The blinds suggestion is another good one. At my house I've put in white wooden venetian blinds in all rooms bar the bedroom which have curtains. Other than the bedrooms the blinds don't get closed (well living room occasionally when watching a 3D programme) so the blinds are purely for dressing the window. I have an issue with straight lines/squares/rectangles and feel like I'm living in a box. In process of fitting coving as I'm decorating the rooms to round it off and need something to soften the squareness of the windows.... yes I'm weird but I'm accepting of my weirdness haha
