Sadly this never happened and I don't expect the computer system to retired anytime in the near future.
Damn, that's true, I'm being naive, banks are the worst businesses getting rid of old computer systems indeed... :(

The system is obviously capable of handling contactless cards as they offer them on the Halifax, Lloyds and TSB* credit cards which use the same system. No idea why they have chosen not to issue them though.

    * = TSB inherited their own deployment of the Lloyds computer system during the split

A good indication of whether the old and new Clarity accounts use the very same system would be whether the bank account numbers to make payments into are the same.

For the old Clarity accounts it's 77-29-00, 00000000.
Anyone with a new Clarity card (card number starting with 5253 03) could please check the back of his/her statement and let us know the Halifax account number payments should be made into?

They are the same (see http://www.halifax.co.uk/creditcards/help-guidance/existing-customers/?pagetabs=1). The account for old cards changed from a Bank of Scotland sort code to a Lloyds sort code around February 2014.
  • 5253 03 Clarity contactless owner here. Got mine in December 2011. If there are some 5253 03 non-contactless cards around, then it's probably due to the postcode restrictions imposed by Lloyds/HBOS as mentioned elsewhere in the thread, though I'm unsure as to whether these still exist or whether they're issuing contactless for replacing expired cards everywhere.

From their point of view, they probably didn't want to roll out a new technology across all of their millions of customers in such a short space of time; postcode was just an easy way to restrict the numbers.

    Wow!

Phoned Halifax yesterday to see if I they could send out a replacement contactless Clarity card (5253 03) for my contact-only card from March 2014. It took a while on hold while they found out if they do them but apparently they are all contactless since July 2014. She just ordered me a replacement.

This morning (24 hours later) my new contactless card arrived for me and by secondary card holder.

    Impressively quick service. :T

    Hello

I have the 5253 03 card and the bank account details on the back of the statement are the same as you quoted.

There were never postcode restrictions per se.

Apparently, londoners got contractless automatically but elsewhere it was available on request.

I called Halifax Credit Card applications team at 0800 028 32 58 to ask whether I'd get a contactless Clarity if I was to cancel the existing one and apply for a new card about a week ago.
They mentioned that, for new applications made by phone or in branch, all Clarity cards but a specific list of post codes would be issued as contactless.

I spoke to a really helpful chap at Halifax Card Services this evening about another matter.

Mentioned contactless cards but he said still not yet. He then went on to explain about re-applying. I'd have to close the account then wait 60 days to reapply. Apparently I'd definitely get accepted as my internal scores are high (to quote his words).

Not an ideal solution, so I'll just stick as I am. Slightly annoying as it would be nice to be able to use this card on the tube.
