My clarity is contactless, but I dont trust it LOL
  • I asked them again. The new cards that have been issued on the Lloyds system can be supplied as contactless, but all the older cards originally issued on the HBOS system are not contactless.

The only option I was given was to reapply, but I am no longer eligible for the Reward part of the card.

For me, one of the big benefits is now being able to use contactless cards on the tube, DLR, London Buses and National Rail in London without needing to use an Oyster card.
  • A few things about HELLifax:
They do have contactless cards but not for customers who joined them before 2011. No explanation was given to me apart from that.

If the card will be declined abroad you better have your credit report handy, because apart from the regular questions like your address and phone numbers the fraud department will ask you something like: when was your last current account opened: June 2009, September 2010, November 2011 or December 2011? It took 25 minutes to unlock the card on my last trip.

Mobile app is getting better, but still quite !!!!!!. Somehow, recently it managed to get worse; previously I was able to see the exchange rate of my foreign transactions, now I have to wait for the statement. Can't see my pending transaction. Can't block/unblock the card using the app. Can't see my PIN online. Hellifax feels like a stone age of mobile banking.

Overall it is a good card but in terms of fees (running costs) only.

While I occasionally get weird security questions, I've never had any like that.

I also don't see why you'd need the exchange rate on the mobile app? You seem like you've had the card for a while now - surely you already have a feel over whether the interest rate is competitive or not and whether you should use the card? I don't believe I can see pending transactions on the mobile app for any of my bank accounts. Nor can you block/unblock the card or see the PIN on any bank account. Why do you expect to be able to do that?
  • I was told that they're rolling out contactless to certain areas of the UK, which doesn't make much sense because they gave me a contactless rewards current account card, but not a contactless clarity card.
Credit 'Score' - Don't buy the credit 'score' that Experian, Equifax and Noddle want to sell you. It's an arbitrary number that means nothing when it comes to applying for credit.

ALWAYS HAVE A DIRECT DEBIT SET UP FOR THE MINIMUM PAYMENT ON YOUR CREDIT CARDS, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER YOU PLAN TO LOGIN AND PAY EACH MONTH.

As per an earlier post, I was told that I have an 'old' Clarity (starting 5286 83) and therefore can't get contactless without reapplying.

I use it mostly in the US and Canada - contactless would be more convenient but they tend just to swipe only for low value transactions if the card isn't contactless so it isn't currently too much of a hassle.

I have gotten many questions like that in the past not just from Halifax

For those of us who care, we want to know what the exchange rate is not just whether it's "competitive", although you can just look it up on the Mastercard site a day or two later, and you can always work it out from the ££ amount anyway

I expect that because when I travelled to the States and Russia in 2012, those functions have been there for donkey's years. Amex UK can show you your PIN; they also have 'push notifications' for smart phones in real time and you can also see pending transactions in the app and on their website. MBNA shows the PIN online. Santander shows pending transactions and FX rate.

One of the Russian banks (QBank) has really amazed me! I could block/unblock my cards online; turn on/off SMS PIN for extra security; turn on/off and set a limit for: online transaction, foreign transaction and cash withdrawals. I could also decide if I want to use an authorised overdraft or have my transactions declined if there are no sufficient funds available. Bloody marvellous!

MBNA and Amex don't provide free forex transactions AFAIK so are not really comparable.

If you hate 'Hellifax' so much, dump them and pay 2.75 - 2.99% loading for all those bells and whistles.

I have a new account Halifax Clarity credit card from about 6 months ago (5253 03) and when I contacted Halifax regarding swapping for a contactless card, as shown on all their literature, I was told they don't do them.
