beginning to get that way, in last few days.
I blame having to sit at home with a broken ankle0 -
It's just that as fast as people are advising you to get the crap uninstalled you are installing more!0

I removed Kingsoft PC Doctor from autostart so that it doesn't increase startup times!
Comodo is the only one that starts up now.
Firefox is up and running in 2 mins 45 secs. Down from 6+ minutes before. Thanks to the helpful folk here. :T
So when/if Novatech send me the SSD, I might get away with using Acronis or Clonezilla recommended here, rather than do a a clean install.0 -
I see what you mean!

or you can run a clean install and simply not install of the carp that you appear inclined to do. Then take an image of that.
Is your Windows 7 install 'genuine'?0 -

I have the original CDs to do a clean install, if it comes to that.
Startup programs, Scheduled Tasks, Plug-ins, Application/Windows Services are now down to 121.
I don't know what some of them are! When I get my head around it, I hope to disable/delete some of them and make the current installation 'cleaner'.0 -
It is activated in control Panel/System and I get all the updates from MS.

Windows 7 is on a single DVD. Do you have a product key on a Microsoft COA?
If not;
Is this a branded machine? Did the mod consist of simply cutting the pins on the LGA 775 socket?
Which Motherboard exactly if not a branded machine?
Trying to ascertain exactly what is running.
I have around 49 processes running and that includes unnecessary crud that I haven't bothered to remove.0 -
I've got a friend who does this, he only has to see the words 'pc' and 'faster' and he is clicking away like a man demented. He's a spammers wet dream. The end result is a pc that runs slower than a stunned slug with me having to go round and uninstall everything.
Result,
He thinks I'm a genius and has to get the beer in :beer:0 -

Startup time used be about only about a minute when Win 7 installed an year ago.
PC is a five year old MESH
Came with Asus P5QPL-AM microATX mobo, 4GB DDR2 and 300W PSU.
In the last few months I tried these:
Asus P5KPL-AM
Asus P5B-VM DO
Asus P5K-VM
Shortly be changing to
Asus P5N7A-VM
Have tried 5 CPUs for the LGA 775 socket.
Intel Core2 Duo CPUs E8400, E6550, E5300, E6320and E6300
(Passmark CPU Marks between 2163 and 1121)
At only £5 to £10 each, so not much grief if cooked when overclocking.
Top spec CPU for LGA 775 is the Core2 Quad Q9650. Passmark CPU Mark 4239
But it costs about £100.
For the 775 to 771 mod, Harpertown Xeons 54xx models (45nm/1333MHz FSB) are suitable.
There are 18 of them and vary a lot in price.
Currently these seem to be the best deals (£15 to £35 at eBay)
Xeon X5460 3.16 GHz Passmark 4459
Xeon E5450 3.00 GHz Passmark 4283
Xeon X5450 3.00 GHz Passmark 4207
Xeon E5440 2.83 GHz Passmark 4027
All are Quad Core and have high multipliers, so should overclock easily.
Mod involves cutting off the two plastic location lugs of the socket. Then the Xeons can fit in.
It has to be done ever so carefully with a new blade so that none of the pins get damaged.
Some of the contacts on the Xeon are blanked off with a self adhesive sticker, delicately applied using a tweezer.
Around £2 for a sticker at eBay.
I bought a Xeon E5440 for £15 at eBay. Using it now with a modded Asus P5K-VM

Do you have a product key on a Microsoft COA? Are you using genuine disc with SP1 included? How is the machine activated?
You need to run a clean install when you get your SSD and to not install all of the crud.
I'm using an E6300 with 2GB of RAM.0 -
I've just finished replacing the hard drive in a Samsung N102SP with a SSD and did a clean install of windows 7.
The performance is a lot better, however it took over 4 hours to download and install all the windows 7 updates.
The inbuilt wifi is not all that great. 25mbs on speedtest.net 2 feet away from the wifi router.
I have a 50mbs virgin connection.
Using a Pluscom USB adapter I get the same speed on the netbook as I get using a wired connection on my desktop.over 73 but not over the hill.0
