Immediately after clean install of the OS as well as all utils and programes?!

After you install and configure your applications and apply all of the updates.
But don't install all of the things that you have now, including the multitude of anti-malware programs.
Keep it simple, so that it is a nice clean image.

    Hi guys!

As adviced I deleted many apps.
    Ran AVG Remover (64 bit)
Turned off auto defrag on start up.

    Protection programes now are:
    1. Comodo Internet Security Premium
    2. Advanced System Care 7
    3. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (catches more than Comodo, IObit, etc)
    4. CCleaner (an old favorite)
    5. Glary Utilities 5 (has loads more features than CCleaner)

Tried to install MS Security Essentials. Then it warned me of conflict with other antivirus and antispyware programs and asked to use a wizard to uninstall them. So I left it for the time being.

I don't know if these below affect start up times!

    Other Utilities and Tools
    1. Belrac Advisor
    2. Nova Bench
    3. BenchMe
    4. HD Tune
    5. Crystal Disk (64 bit)
    6. Speed Fan
    7. Prime95 Stress Test
    8. AIDA64 (for measuring temps)

    Applications
    1. uTorrent
    2. Foobar2000
    3. FLAC Frontend
    4. Spotify
    5. All Media Server
    6. CyberLink PowerDVD
    7. Google Earth
    8. Nero
    9. Tools for some printers and scanners
    10. MS Office 2013
    11. MS Silverlight
    12. Mozilla Firefox
    13. IE 10 (64 bit)

    Bootup Times
Glary Utils says, 158 programs started. Time 1 min 19 ses.
Really takes 4 min 10 secs from power on, before PC is usable.
Usabale meaning Firefox up and running.
Down from 6+ minutes before you guys helped :)
7 mins till the HD stops churning away.

For reference, what is the fastest bootup time to expect for Win7 on HD?!

    SVCHOST
14 of these can be seen running in the Task Manager
The biggest takes around 700,000 K at first
After about 10 mins it comes down to 117,060 K

    Comments please!

    Deleted some. Now have:
    1. Comodo Internet Security Premium
    2. Advanced System Care 7
    3. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
    4. CCleaner
    5. Glary Utilities 5
Now down to 2 min 55 secs from power on to Firefox up and running. Down from 6+ minutes :)
Thinking of deleting CCleaner or Glary Utilities 5. Not sure which one is best.
    Also thinking about replacing
    Comodo Internet Security Premium and
    Advanced System Care 7
    with
    Avast Free 2014 or
    Microsoft Security Essentials
    Any comments advice?!
BTW. what is the bootup time to expect with Win 7 ?
    Thanks!

  • Advanced System Care is a registry cleaner/optimiser. It is generally agreed that these programs do little or no good and may actually cause problems. Anyway, Ccleaner includes similar functionality - there's no point in keeping both. Keep Ccleaner - it's genuinely useful.

If you've shelled out money for Glary and want to keep it for that reason, at least stop it from running at Windows startup.

Can't comment on Comodo from personal experience. It's a reputable anti-malware system, but may be too resource heavy for your system. Avast or AVG would probably be more suitable.

Don't run real-time monitoring in Malwarebytes (only available in the paid version). Run the program manually every couple of weeks.

To go back to your original enquiry: I've just replaced the hard disk in my laptop with a Crucial MX100 256GB SSD. The difference is amazing and well worth the investment (£80), but please, don't consider an SSD to be an alternative to a properly optimised boot routine. If you do go the SSD route and decide to clone your existing HD instead of doing a clean install, check out this site for a number of useful tweaks to get the best out of the new drive.

    TY fenlander_uk :)
Have saved that link about running SSDs.
Hopefully Novatech will get more stocks of the Intel 520 SSD that I ordered.

Based on the opinions here, looks like its going to be just
    AVAST Free running as startup.
Malwarebytes, CCleaner and Glary Utilities 5 don't autostart so I could keep those for use when needed?!

BTW. I just downloaded Kingsoft PC Doctor.
Gives good control on startup items. My startup progs are now down from 163 to 109.

I installed Win7 over an year ago, but never got around to looking under the bonnet. Hope to get into it more, now that I am sitting at home most of the time with an ankle in plaster.
