The question was if there is formal list of actual signs or if they can make them up. I know what the sign is warning, it even has "Tanks" written in a box under the sign just in case you cant guess what it is.

The highway code doesnt have the tanks warning sign in it though nor does the list of signs on the gov.uk site.
The highway code only shows the popular signs.

Things have changed since you got your highway code (eg motorways have been built)

The "official" government document (last updated in 2010) is here:
    https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/know-your-traffic-signs

Your query regarding the picture of a tank is answered on page 13

It is on gov.uk, but the system won't let me post a link. Look for Know Your Traffic Signs, page 13.

The Highway Code only shows a selection of the more common warning signs.

Whilst my original one was on stone tablets with the wife learning to drive we have one of those new fangled paper ones.

To answer my own question though, it appears there are guidelines on signs rather than a definitive list. The one the OP linked to doesnt appear in the guide

Warning that I am going to slow down and possibly stop in the right hand lane to do a u-turn.

There is a definitive list: the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2002. The sign in the OP doesn't appear to be there either.

However, highway authorities can employ non-standard signs, but only with the specific approval of the Secretary of State. If the OP has nothing better to do, he could ask the local council what it's all about.

I thought its an attempt at warning of a tunnel or low bridge

Not even sure if there is a list of offical signs even? I know this one thats not far from us isnt in my copy of the highway code

What is in the Highway Code is an empty triangle - and that's a warning sign in general. The image drawn in the triangle gives you a clue what you're looking out for ... so it's a warning there might be tanks about, doing things that tanks do and that you'd find unusual.

The OP's sign is a combination of:

    - the Highway Code sign for U turns
    - the red circle meaning "prohibited"

So it's a warning that there's a gap - and you're not allowed to make U turns there.
  • If U truly want to know - ring Leeds council highways dept up - quote road number to them & ask.
