    year's food budget £1,920
  • I have been pretty rubbish this month. Haven't kept track of spending or kept receipts for last two weeks, and I started so well! Perhaps I will have another go in October, my cash flow will be a bit easier then so perhaps more reason to have a food budget so that it doesn't get out of control!
    January grocery challenge £0/£300

    DFW2017 #49 £356/£8031
  • cant believe where this month has gone, i think ny sig is up to date but i may need to add a bit when i fish through my purse for any stray receipts.
got another weekend shop on this month but not doing too bad.
had to reign it in a bit as we had a major household maintenance spend and had to pay some off on a couple of school trips so the belt needed tightening somewhat.

No matter how prepared I think I am something unexpected always comes up to sabotage my NSDs. Have to say it's usually child related, yesterday all three came home with school photo orders. Is it too mean to say I don't want the school photo lol!?

Spent a LOT of time in the kitchen yesterday making tea (Shepherd's Pie/Baked Jam Roll) and preparing in advance for tonight's family celebration meal. It's our 18th wedding anniversary. Having liver pate with caramelised onion/slow roasted pork shoulder/toffee apple pie washed down with a bottle of bubbly. The meal for 4-5 including wine worked out about £10 so more or less managed to work that into the budget without going too far over. Got some lovely home based entertainments planned so feeling proud of my frugal achievements today :)

Trying to strike a balance between standing guard on the fridge, and letting the family help themselves. If I don't keep an eye on them they randomly eat ingredients that I have planned to make meals with. Its a bit tough on them because the fridge does tend to look empty sometimes, and teenagers/hubby do like snacking. Just said they have to ask me first before they eat something but that feels a bit strict!

I once saw a picture of an American household's fridge where the Mum, who had 2 teenage boys, had half a shelf with a sign stuck on saying "If you want snacks, help yourself to these" and she filled it with fruit, veg, yoghurts, chocolate bars etc. or anything that needed to be used up and wasn't planned for a meal.

It's genius, well done that woman!:T

Everything goes in my oven at ~200°C :o. They only took a couple of minutes, definitely less than 5 but I'd keep an eye on them :)

Frizzle thanks for listing the 50% off items, that's really helpful :)

  • Im declaring at £252/£250. So a £2.00 overspend. This is due to running out of Bath stuff a little early. Dd's have started to run their own baths as I'm trying to make them more independent but the trouble is they have so much bubble bath and shower gel. Lectures were given along with me showing them exactly how much they should use. Going over to October now xx

  • £66.04 on azda delivery. Got some great substitution bargains. An extra 24 dishwasher tablets and two extra loo rolls for original price. Also my 50p Scottish tablet was substituted for a packet of tunnock teacakes. They never have that tablet in so it's a fun game to see what they sub it with. Currently at £178.01/£250

Hello again, back from my lovely break.

Marie I am sorry about your loss (((hugs))) xx

Lynnejk thank you, I am in the process of planning next month challenge and will use your guidelines.

Ok, declaring bankrupt on this month GC, lack of proper planning and not thinking about extras, plus a number of stresses, expected and unexpected, have contributed to the failure of my challenge.

We stayed within budget this break, had decided not to go too tight as we felt we needed to A- be generous with our hosts B- not put ourselves under strain as this was meant to be a break away from the horrors of the last few days prior to going.

We ate well, gave our hosts a small gift, bought fish and chips for all one night, bought a few things to take back with us (at the Baxters factory shop, bargainous!) and came back with some change.

Only 5 days left to end of month, so even if I am out of the challenge for this month I am putting myself through a mini challenge of £30 to end of month. I need veg, eggs and bread. The kitchen, even if not completed as such, is viable so I shall get a nice pot of chick peas and one of kidney beans to soak. Finally! Today I am making 1 lt of hazelnut milk for DH's breakfast cereal, in fact I might make porridge now that I think of it.

Will report back later as I need to do a shop. And a visit to my poor neglected allotment to see if there is anything edible.
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).
