Congratulations to someone who knows that the word is could have and not could of. As so many on here seem to think.RuthnJasper wrote: »One of my best friends is called Lance. He would be most flattered to be described as a "hot spot".
I hope the OP isn't driving on roads anywhere near me; I'm not sure he should be allowed control of a vehicle. Plus, the Highways Agency aren't complete fools (though sometimes it seems that way); if they were using things that could have caused so much damage to vehicles (thus generating many insurance claims) they would have closed the road entirely.
It rained here yesterday and, as the ground was still warm, it steamed as it evaporated... can I sue the Almighty for potential undercarriage corrosion?!
Is it nearly term time again...? I can afford anything that I want. I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0

Ah, a fellow pedant, how refreshing !! I really do think, however, that this thread belongs in the "Funny Jokes" section. Funniest thread for a long time.0

Sounds like they were burning off asbestos if you can smell its certainly not good. I know because my dad does it for a living. Everyone knows you have to turn the blowers of and hold your nose when you got past these things.
 Good luck.
They would have been burning off thermoplastic markings, and the smell the OP described is pretty typical so if there is no visible damage to the car I wouldn't worry.
I suspect your old man is pulling your leg, or someone is pulling his. I've never heard of asbestos used in road markings and if there were you wouldn't see it being burnt off within a metre or so of the travelling public.
I'd also add to the comments about driving carefully around roadworks. It's no fun being 1.2m away from fast moving traffic, even when the drivers are paying full attention.0
