"hot spot lance" and car damage ?

Just drove home from work in my new car. On the dual carriage way, one of the lanes was closed off so that workers could burn off the lane markings with one of those hot air torches (hot spot lance ?) One of these guys was burning off the line that marked the edge of the lane I was driving in. Really too close for comfort !! I noticed smoke coming off the ground. It was too late/dangerous to slow down or brake so kept going through this cloud of smoke. Afterwards I noticed a really bad smell in my car of burning rubber or a gassy smell. Could this machine have damaged my car ? Anyone have any experience of these things ? It's still dark so need to take a closer look in daylight.

I would think it's highly unlikely that there would be any damage at all.

Perhaps a few extra tar spots might be the worst thing - if that.

Easily removed with Autoglym Tar Remover (other products are available)

I use it before I polish the car as a matter of routine, as you get tar spots anyway.

You drove through a cloud of smoke and now have a smoky burning smell in the car and wonder where its coming from?

It probably just roasted the nut behind the wheel :)

    This is a joke, right?

Suppose it is still school holiday time!
  • You are joking right?

Have you ever wondered why you don't run out of oxygen to breathe when you're in the car with the windows rolled up? Or where the air that comes out of the vents comes from?

You're not driving around in a hyperbaric chamber you know.

yeah, I guess I was expecting a flurry of sarcastic, unhelpful comments. Cant you people find anything better to do ? Don't you have jobs or some other constructive way of filling the long, lonely hours ??
I wasn't talking about damage from the cloud of smoke. I was talking about the flare (or whatever the technical term is) coming out of the end of what is effectively a big, long blow torch !!! What sort of distance are these things dangerous at because I'm not sure if any part of my car came into contact with it. It was very close. That is why I asked if anybody who HAD EXPERIENCE OF THESE THINGS could advise. Anyway, feel free to correct my spelling and grammar

Best thing is to stop posting on here and evacuate and call the fire brigade to douse your car down - it may have been smouldering all night and the petrol tank could blow at any moment.

Yes, I have a job. I come here to amuse myself when I take my VDU breaks. You need to understand that asking for advice on such a poorly-formatted and detail-less question is asking for trouble. Did no one at school ever say "ask a silly question, receive a silly answer"?

All you've said is that the 'thing' was "too close for comfort" and "very close".

    How close? A metre (3'3")? A centimetre (25/64ths")?

As a driver who has been able to state categorically that it was "too late/dangerous to slow down or brake", thereby implying a level of spatial and temporal awareness, you must surely be able to estimate an actual distance by which the 'thing' was separated from your vehicle.

If you include such detail, you may find responses more helpful.

    Well?

    It isn't dark now.

How big is the scorch mark on your car?

Are you actually serious ??? I told you the guy was burning off the line on the edge of the lane I was driving in. Does that not give you the information you require to estimate the distance yourself ? Funnily enough I do normally carry a tape measure in my car for those frequent occasions when I need to measure the distance between my car wheel and HOT BURNING OBJECTS, but I must have inconveniently left it at home
