So you want to know if this can damage your car, what is preventing you from looking at your car? Also, the only time it is too late for a driver to brake is when they are driving too fast and not paying attention.

Are you actually serious ??? I told you the guy was burning off the line on the edge of the lane I was driving in. Does that not give you the information you require to estimate the distance yourself ? Funnily enough I do normally carry a tape measure in my car for those frequent occasions when I need to measure the distance between my car wheel and HOT BURNING OBJECTS, but I must have inconveniently left it at home

    Yes, I was perfectly serious.

What kind of car do you drive? A Smart ForTwo, for instance, is quoted as quite narrow at 1510mm, and a 'standard' UK motorway lane is 3650mm, although many are closer to 3000mm dependent upon space. Therefore, if you drive a Smart Car, you could have had up to 2140mm of clearance to play with.

However, if you drive a Lamborghini Aventador, your margin for error would drop to 1385mm on the 'standard' lane.

As per my previous post, if you include some more details, you may get more helpful answers. We're not mind-readers, you know.

Only you know the distances involved, and your reluctance to add details suggests to me that you're unable to judge distance effectively.

Since we're playing the silly statements game (see tape-measure comment above), I infer from that lack of spatial awareness, via extrapolation, the conclusion that maybe driving isn't for you.

There are 00000s of roads, of differing widths and layouts.

Too dangerous to slow down? What? You should have been driving an appropriate speed well before passing the workmen on the side of t he road

That sounds like driving without due care and attention, if there are workers busy trying to repair the road and you're driving too fast to even slow down.

You can't estimate the distance between the nearside of your car and an object as you pass it?

You must find parking quite tricky. Still, by the time you get to your driving test, you should find it straightforward.

You car is fine, you're fine and if you felt that you were too close to a road worker to slow down and move away, your driving most certainly is not.

But who am I to let common sense get in the way of a not very good rant ?

The highlight for me has been the dramatic capitalisation of "HOT BURNING OBJECTS".

Any damage it could have done would have been obvious - it'd have burst the tyre or burnt off paint.

But these are likely professionals who have had hundreds of cars pass already and it'll have been fine. The thing is hot but it's got a pretty narrow burn range. The smoke gets everywhere though and properly stinks.
  • I'm outta here. Got to drive my still smouldering car to work and check dual carriageway dimensions. Busy day for me !
    Nice chatting with you !
