There's a very interesting section on this in 'Superfreakonomics', basically debunking it as an urban myth. The murder did happen, and there is a 'bystander effect', but virtually everything else that is known or believed about the events surrounding the murder case are pretty much wrong (most of it made up by the newspaper reporter who first wrote about the murder). Good summary here
    http://digest.bps.org.uk/2007/10/truth-behind-story-of-kitty-genovese.html
For example, "whereas the myth states that none of the apartment residents overlooking the crime intervened, in fact the murderer felt compelled to abandon his first attack after one of the witnesses shouted at him."

And you can read the chapter here
    http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=e_vYt9MEwKcC&lpg=PT134&ots=r0uzGYs4Xs&dq=superfreakonomics%20bystander%20effect&pg=PT131#v=onepage&q=superfreakonomics%20bystander%20effect&f=false

Being aware of this " effect" I raced over to a man who was collapsed in the market place in Durham last year. He was surrounded by people. I threw myself into the middle of them declaring I was a first aider.

This is a lovely way to use up leftover meat http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/1848/barneys-monday-night-rice

The reviews say it tastes like Singapore rice from the takeaway - never had it myself. I use whatever veggies I have in the fridge' usually peppers and mushrooms. Even OH likes it and he is a fussy eater

I love this recipe strewth. Thank you for reminding me of it:T
