wheelie bin dilemma

For example, I would gladly buy a TV not in a box, with loads of polystirene packaging, assuming it will be cheaper outside of a box. But what choice do I have?
Public are punished for the mess the businesses create in racking up their profits, governments are quick to blame the public for the unrecyclable mess, but in reality, over the years, they and their greedy little companies, have created it!
Under the new WEEE directive, if you buy a new TV, the retailer has to take the old one away - don't know about the packing though ! See:-

I have had my brown bin about 2 months... still not been collected, as it happens the grass etc has actually broken down to nearly half what it was so i can chuck more in there when I cut the grass again, we are not allowed to put food waste in there, would make sense if we could as the council could use it for compost.
We have not got blue bins here, and even in the "civic amenity" site they only take newspapers glass and cans. so plastic, cardboard etc has to go in the bin.0 -
Yes i totally agree, its a badly thought out system to save money!!! we too have the damn maggots!! the lid and inside is full of them ive no idea how to get rid of em!!!! flys everywhere!! disgusting!!!
I dare not put anything im not allowed in the recycling bin, as they have already left it full and not emptied it and left a naughty sticker on it!!!!!!!!!! So im doing no recycling at the moment!! they will not take any extra bagged iytems of recyclable materials left by the bin either, so im burning it all!
this sytem really is driving me nuts!!!
Someone asked earlier how many living in the house, there are two adults , a 15 yr old and a 4 year old, as well as 4 cats and about 1 million maggots!!!We have had the alternate bin collection going since December, it is a horrid, filthy and unhygienic way to carry on. I had it admitted to me by a senior member of the council that it was mainly implemented for financial reasons. We have had maggots on the wall the bin is up against, this is even though the lid was down and the bin was not overfilled. We compost yet still fill the bin, our recycling bin is always full yet they wont take tetrapak or glass!!!! so I make sure I fill it with tetrapaks and glass, if they force us to do things then I will recepricate. I have first hand knowledge of the waste industry as I have previously worked as a waste regulation officer, and I know full well that most of what the councils spout is total BS. I have also worked as a HGV driver and been to many recycling site to load containers with paper etc for shipping to china and the far east for "recycling" - yeah right, we all know it gets landfilled over there. The whole ABC system is just a way for the council/government to impose more "green" taxes!!0 -

I can remember when recycling was encouraged, not enforced, I remember as a kid getting paid 10p, for every empty pop bottle i took back to the shop, when milkmen collected the empty milk bottles, when we would collect as many cans as possible to weigh in for a few pence, your shopping at the local grocers would be handed over in a paper bag, or a box. now the countries spent all these years producing everything it sells, in plastic, from plastic milk bottles to carrier bags, all in the name of cost reduction, thats the main reason this country and many others are struggling with recycling, its virtually ALL non bio degradable. Even a simple little polystyrene cup, takes over 50years to degrade. Nowadays, you have to pay to recycle, from alluminium to glass, the old methods always worked, we never had such problems as we do now. So to blame folk, for buying stuff in the wrong packaging, i.e. Milk, simply because selling it in a plastic bottle is cheaper to mass produce, or that it is somehow their fault for having too much rubbish, is ridiculous. I and the general public never once said "can you put my milk in a plastic bottle please, so it doesnt smash.". No, in the age of cost reduction, people are forced into having no other option. For example, I would gladly buy a TV not in a box, with loads of polystirene packaging, assuming it will be cheaper outside of a box. But what choice do I have?

Agree, sometimes when I buy shoes I suggest that they do NOT pack the box, and recycle it instead. However some large well known companies have a policy which requires me to take the bl**dy box whether I want it or not!0 -
We should recycle thoughts along with food.0

Let the council learn that it's taking the p*ssing collecting less than once a week.
I blame the damn tree huggers, they should be shot for putting ordinary hard working people out with all this saving the enrivonment nonsense.
Well said, I can't be bothered with all this environmental c*ap either. Their is absolutely no way on this earth can the UK save this planet without China and the US getting involved, when I see some real evidence that is happening then just maybe I will start recycling and reducing my carbon foot print but until then I will drive my kids the 5 mins to school, go on a few foreign holidays - because in reality YOU ARE NOT GOING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE, has Live Aid and Live 8 made a huge difference?, no there are still children dying/straving in Africa, there are some things we just cannot fix!"Wisdom doesn't automatically come with old age. We have been on fortnightly collecions now for about 3 years. At first there were a few issues (nothing more than teething problems) but now everybody is used to it. it is second nature.
A few years back we had one little tin or plastic round bin for all our rubbish .. then we got a large wheely bin for all our rubbish .. now we have 3 bins that we split our rubbish between. The solution is to reduce the amount of rubbish.
I think the OP said they had a large garden .. I am not sure what you mean by large but our rear garden is about 500sq m and mainly in grass ... about twice a year I generate too much to get in the bin (due to cutting back a rough ditch separating us from a field) .. rest of the time no problem (and I have never seen a maggot in my rubbish ... not that I look). Our grey bin is usually less than half full. Our recycling bin is the one that is usually fullest but rarely an issue.
You will get used to it .. it just takes a few months of moaning and whinging and then everything will fall into place
IvanI don't care about your first world problems; I have enough of my own!0 -
I think you are all really LUCKY that your garden waste is collected, I have to take mine to the dump/tip.
We get a weekly collection of rubbish, we have to leave the loose bags out on the road. I have my own wheelie bin, I wheel it to the grass verge & empty it. Personally I think it would be better if they just took wheelie bins, because sometimes an animal will come along & rip open a bag.
We have a fortnightly collection of recycling, they give us one green open plastic box (a bit like those plastic stacking boxes you would buy for a childs toys), I fill this easily in the first week (& I only put cardboard in, I could more other things in but no point as I would fill it quicker), then I have to put everything recycling & all in the rubbish bin.
How stupid is that.
My sister lives in Crawley so shes under a different council, but not that far from me & Crawley council use slimmer wheelie bins (with RED lids) for recycling. So she can recycle loads.
Perhaps I should write a letter to the council about it, but they probably wouldn't take any notice.
But they really could collect more recycling.
Perhaps I should just buy another similar box & leave it out & see if they empty it.0
