wheelie bin dilemma

Not sur eif this is the right place or not, sorry if not!!
I am have a major problem with the new wheelie bin system our cou ncil have bought in and just wondered if anyone else had similar probs, also just wanted to vent!!
We have now been given 3 bins, one brown one(for food and garden waste) and grey one (for general household rubbish) and one blue lidded one for recyclables)
The brown one we are not allowed to put anything in bags in, so just have to tip food waste into it(yuk), its only collected every fortnight. Now i have a huge garden, so lots of garden waste. The bins nowhere near big enough. and i am sick of maggots climbing out of the bin. ive had to move it right to the front of the house as was sick of the flys coming in the kitchen windows. not sure how we r supposed to wash it!!!
The gen household rubbish, again fortnightly collections, we are also not allowed to put anything bagged in and no recyclables.
The recyclable, just tins, plastic cartons etc, no glass and no tetra pack.
This week my brown(the disgusting one), was completely full, i had already put it out when i realised there was a punnet of a few strawberrys in the fridge, so i placed it on the top of the recyclable stuff in the other bin.
The bloody binmen left a sticker on it saying they had NOT emptied it because it contained food waste!!!!!!!!!!! it said i must remove it and it will then be emptied the next time round(so thats a month)!!! So i WONT be recycling anyting for the next month cos my bin is full(it also p[ointed out that nothing would be collected if left next to the bins)!!! I will just have to burn it!!
Our bin day is friday and all three of my bins are full(its only monday), only one is due for emptying this week!! So maggots are back!!!!!
Does anyone else find this new system inconvenient, confusing and disgusting!!!!
I think it encourages flytipping, rats and disease!!! what does anyone else think!!!!
I have had to revert to having a fire in my garden every day to get rid of the rubbish!! Great for the environment!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AND not too good for my garden!!!
I have recently spent some time in India and thats how we had to get rid of our rubbish there!!!!!!!! Thought we were a little more forward than that in the UK!!!!!!! clearly not!!

Try removing the strawberries from the recycling bin then phone the council and ask them to empty it. Our council will normally come round and empty the bin once the offending item has been removed.

If you have a *huge garden* why is any compostable material (including the strawberries* going into your bin. Make it into compost, there's less waste, and you get a soil conditioner.
Huge thread on the greenfingered board about making compost. I'll find you the link if you like.

are you sure you're meant to be putting food in the brown bin? We have similar and the brown bin is just for garden stuff - if you just put your food waste in the normal grey bin it should stop the maggots.0

Novelli, you have just about summed up the complete and utter total stupidity of our "recycling system" in this country.
It is carried out by your local Council with only one aim:- the meet the "targets" that have been imposed on them by Central Government.
Central Government, of course, have had these targets imposed on them by the EU.
No one is looking at the bigger picture to see if all these local schemes are actually doing any good as a whole. Most of them are not !
We all religiously sort out our paper, cardboard, bottles and cans so they don't go into landfill. A lot of Councils don't collect all this stuff, so every week millions of cars drive to their local recycling centre to "recycle" it. Now we discover that there are "mountains" of recyclables that no one wants - so we ship it to China or India and put it into landfill there - absolutely brilliant ! The writers of "yes minister" could not have dreamt up a more ludicrous script.
It is hardly surprising that people dump it in the hedgerows, it is certainly easier and it MAY well be "greener" than it shipping to China !0 -
cor blimey i bet u moaned before u got your bin for garden rubbish too didnt u? "Oh but i cant put my grass in the bin, i have to take it to the dump" and now when they take the bulk of it away for you you STILL moan! How did you cope with one black bin to fill a week when now its apparently full as well as ur recycle bin and u have extra, thats a bin a week and then some! Flip me im sorry if this sounds nasty, but im sick of english folk moaning about their bloody bins! Its forever on the news. Get over it and learn to reduce your rubbish!
and sure they didnt take your bin when you had food in it - its not their job to start taking bits of bloody food out of your bin when it shouldnt be there, imagine if they did that for every house?
and if u dont want to put each item into your brown bin, get a small bin for the house to empty at the end of each day or every other day.0 -
For your info i do empty the food waste into the brown bin at the end of each day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I dont make my own compost because where we live all it does is encourage rats.
I managed perfectly well before becuase our binmen were very good and took all manner of rubbish that we left out, now they are not allowed to!!!
How can i reduce our rubbish!!!! rubbish is rubbish at the end of the day!!
Your post is offensive, go back to the DB board and carry on offending people there!!!!!!!!!!0 -
HAHAHA u crack me up. Rubbish is rubbish because we bring it into our house. Try to buy stuff with less packaging on it etc. At the moment i have no brown bin or recycle box because im in a new build and they dont come down here yet. I take my recycling away myself every 2 weeks and my black bin every 3. Yes my black bin happily lasts me 3 weeks and i know im only a family of 3, but even when i lived at home in a family of 5 we never filled our black bin. I think we live in such a throw away society that we really just need to reassess how we buy.
and for the record, im sure i offended people on more than just the DB forum, but hey, its nice to know im remembered for something even if i havent a clue who you are

This has already been asked but you didn't answer. Are you supposed to put food in the brown bin? We have the exact same system as you except the brown bin is just for garden waste, I suspect yours is the same and that is why they wont take it. If you start putting it in the general rubbish bin they will empty all of the bins and it might cut down the maggot problem.
Also if you now have more bins but fewer collections you still have the same bin space per time as before.0 -
Stuff like grass rots down really quick, I am not aware rats like it,surely that would be one thing less to go in the bin?I only thought rats might go after vegetable matter in compost,i dont know.0

We have 1 bin, 1 green box and 4 green garden waste bags, the bin is for general rubbish and the box is for recycleables, our bin is only less than half full some weeks and the box has been full before, we put any other garden waste eg branches, twigs in teh green bags, any garden rubbish eg grass cuttings we put on the compost(you can buy a composter) along with food waste which so far hasnt created any rat problems
our bin and box are emptied every week and the garden waste bags are emptied every 2 weeks, do you scrutinise what goes into the bins, with the galss could you not take it to the supermarket when you do your shop,
