wheelie bin dilemma

its not actually that new, its just that with the summer(supposedly), ive been doing stuff in garden and haveing general sort out etc, I have no objection to taking excess rubbish to the tip (to generate yet more pollution and traffic), i have no prob with burning rubbish(to generate more pollution). BUT i do have an objection to fortnightly collections and maggots(generating disease)!!!!!! Im sorry if some of you think we waste too much.
Oh and im no upper/middle class who dosent read the tabloids!! I have actually spent the last 6 months in India teaching in the slums(voluntarily),(generating yet more air pollution, sorry)!! so am more than aware of the issues surrounding waste!!!!!
AND i watch big brother, so cant be that middle class!!!!!:mad:0 -
In that case, it might be in need of a little tweaking. I know that the original scheme around here had the rule about no food waste in the green 'compostable' bin, but this was changed by the council when it became apparent that having food waste out for up to two weeks was a health hazard, and now we can put it in our compost bin as well.
Not sure about the maggots though - we only had them once and that was because we hadn't closed the lid properly, so it is probably worth making sure you never put so much in that you can't get the lid on enough to keep the flies out.0 -
We are still on the once a week household collection with the every other week recycling collection. Not a problem. Have huge garden waste this week and they do a special extra uplift if necessary. I am lucky, I am scheduled for Saturday so did huge gardening yesterday but overdid it and could not continue today.
Put fresh fish wrapping paper in bin on Friday with a Monday empty. When putting last of non-recycling rubbish in bin on Monday before emptying, it was totally smelling of fish(that was only Friday-Monday morning!) I hate to think what bin would have smelt like after 2 weeks! If we go away on holiday and will miss a bin empty, our neighbour puts the bin up on our behalf to prevent this. DD just going over to a 2-week collection and now with a 2 week old new baby we have had to buy a nappy wrapping machine as the smell after two weeks will be horrendous. I know, the most eco friendly way is no disposables, but with 2 kids in nappies, convenience etc etc I the poo newborns produce - I see where they are coming from. They now have 3 children and time factor kicks in here too! Council say they will provide an extra bin if 2 children under 4! Jobsworthy was round the other day to check that there were 3 children in house and 2 under 4!!!!!

We are on a twin bin scheme.
.
The first week they collect the black wheely bin with 'rubbish rubbish' if you know what I mean..
.
The second week they collect the green bin that we can put cardboard and garden waste in we also have three compost bins, as in our area we have been told the green bin can not be used for food waste (cooked or none cooked) would be a health hazard due to foot and mouth (was told that about a year ago when I called the council to ask why we could not put uncooked veg peelings in) -stupid policy!!.
.
On the whole this does work well with a blue box scheme where we put cans, glass, aluminum and clothes. So we are happy..
.
HOWEVER, we went on holiday to Devon last year and their policy is very different, they have a green bin for garden waste that is collected for composting by the council and it was very clear that people were expected to put garden waste, and cooked and uncooked food in......meat, cooked veg, porridge, everything not eaten...the bin was disgusting, you can imagine, in summer, maggots everywhere, didnt see rats but would not be surprised as they go for cooked food dont they..
.
The owner of the property was very clear about what went where so I know we did not get it mixed up, he gave us a leaflet from the council and said he would be fined if stuff went in the wrong place!!! .
.
Im just glad our council has a better policy, although im not allowed to put peelings in with garden rubbish which is a bit silly. It basically means if I uproot my carrots from the garden (garden waste) i can put them straight in the green bin (if I wanted to), however if i take them into my kitchen and peel and top them, I cant put the peel or leaves in the green bin because it is kitchen waste!!!! .
.
They also do very little about plastic recycling in our area, when I called the council and asked which types of plastic they recycled (using the recycling symbol and number on plastic items as a guide) the person in the recycling department said 'i thought we only recycled 4 pint plastic milk bottles' !!!! if they dont know, how is the public supposed to get inthusiastic about it?!.
.
I am totally commited to recycling, but not to how its beeing done! .
.
I think there should be a sensible national policy, instead of each council trying to re-invent the wheel, and getting it square shaped!!!0 -
we dont get plastic pop bottles or cardboard collected but at christmas i think they collect cardboard for a few weeks with presents and everythingNo Links in Signature by site rules - MSE Forum Team 20

I've noticed lots of councils have different policies from reading this thread. We too have 3 bins, the household waste one(fortnightly) and the 2 recycling ones(opposite fortnight). We can only put garden waste and cardboard in our green bin, but, contrary to the OP we can actually put glass in our blue one. This has been in effect in our area for 3 years and is proving very successful.
The only thing that anoys me in our area(and this has been pointed out to our local council by many people) is that we have a "rougue" eliment living in the next street who come and play football in our street. If they are asked to play in their own street (due to cars being damaged previously) they then on recycling days, very kindly, pop a tin can into everyones plastic bin. We are all then left with full bins with "naughty" stickers on them.
The only thing our council must be praised for is if your recycle bins are full you are welcome to leave extra recycling in an open black bag next to your bin. They empty the bags and pop them back through the handles of your bin. They won't do this with household waste ones (except at christmas) but on the rare occasion my bin is full i either pop the bag into the garage untill they empty my bin again, or run it down to the local tip.
Also our council do actually provide compost bins for free if you ask for them.0 -
