There are plenty of cats that get stuck in garages and sheds for days and when they come out they are a bit thin but they dont all have kidney issues.

Yeah OK - I bow to your expertise - the vets are wrong.

As I understand it poor kidney function may be well advanced before the animal becomes symptomatic. Certainly my dog has no symptoms of kidney problems - it was picked up on a blood test.

Kidney failure is often a process rather than a discrete event. Therefore, damage may not be apparent for years, but the kitty may show symptoms of kidney failure earlier than they might otherwise have done, due to damage caused when younger. Very difficult to quantify of course.....
It is a good idea to be alone in a garden at dawn or dark so that all its shy presences may haunt you and possess you in a reverie of suspended thought.

    Hope that solves your problem.

My old cat's 'fussiness' extended to beef cat food.

He'd eat any variety and any make but he would not, under any circumstances, eat beef cat food.

I miss the bloody awkward sod. ;)

My two are rescue cats and eat almost anything. I give them wet and dried food but any left over protein as well.

Cheaper food is made with cheaper ingredients, its not cheap because the manufacture just wants to charge less its because its all the nasty bits. They then fill it full of colour and additives to try to appeal to cats. In essence to try and make it look and smell like nicer cuts of meat.

    .

I don't think cats (or any animals) have the concept of cheap and expensive cuts of meat - that's purely a human marketing thing!

I think this is such a sad statement to make; I can't imagine not having pets, especially cats, around. Luckily I have never had that problem, all my cats have usually eaten what has been put in front of them unless they have been ill.

But your cats must be eating something to stay alive. I am wondering, as they are now considered quite elderly, being 16, have you had them checked out by a vet? I have always found that elderly cats don't eat a lot, perhaps the very small amounts they do eat are more than sufficient.

Yes, it is a bit of a sad statement and, don't get me wrong, I don't wish them any ill or anything but maybe because I got them when they were already 14 I have never really got attached to them.

It's not just that they don't eat, they cry all the time for food and I try loads of different foods and they are not interested. They do, obviously, eat little bits of food, or obviously they would not still be alive. They are presently eating pouches from Lidl but they will eat something one day and not the next. They have been to the vet who says they are healthy especially considering their ages. Also because they won't go outside they have litter trays which I am not keen on and despite cleaning them literally every time they are used, they often poo and pee on the floor.

I know it is me but, as I say, there will be no more cats in my house. I will always have a pet though. I have 2 dogs and could never imagine being without one

  • Amara, have you looked at Amazon Subscribe and save?

You don't save masses but it much less faffing about then having to make a special trip to special bloody pet shop - I have fussy dogs. I also get the gp food there and basically anything else I am going to need every three months!! You don't have to remember to order it, it all happens automatically I love it!!

He's fussy. Eats only Felix AGAIL. I live in a small town , shops here not always have it and if they do, not on offer, so I buy it on weekly trip to supermarket. Sometimes food runs out and he sulks. . I've tried to buy cheaper brand, but he just won't it it, that was a waste. He has access to dry food and water all the time .

Feed it what you want to feed it. They won't go hungry and will eat what you give them eventually.
