Not if they are paying attention. Why would they do that? It doesn't look anything like 60279.

yes, I know that, and apparently, you know that, but most folk will just jot down whatever number the pointer is closest to.

    Example:

First dial cannot be a 6 when the needle is past the 7.

though, in OP's picture it is indeed a six, although it appears to be a seven, that's because the pointer in the 1000's dial is still in the 9-0 segment and has not passed the 0.
  • Hi,
Now rather than waiting until Sept 6th for the engineer to come, should i ring up asap and ask for the meter to be checked for faults or a replacement?

you can ask for a meter check, but as nightswimming says, if meter is found to be ok then you have to pay for the check.

I would think that meter is ok, you have misread it, as sacsquacco says, you appear to be looking down on meter so looks like pointer is past the seven.

Phone up and give them the correct reading, they might even send someone out to verify your reading, though I would think when you give them the correct reading and they compare it to your usage it will be rectified.

How does you consumption look for the period when you deduct the 10,000 units?

the suppliers usual response to a reading dispute is to send another meter reader to do a checkread. If, he s a bit thick he will also deem it a 7. I had exactly the same problem with an old lady who was billed £500 over. She requested a second opinion and the next meter reader who came also messed it up as did the first one. Dial meters have to be viewed dead level or the pointers can appear higher or lower , but on this occasion it was a slightly out of alignment pointer. It happens rarely but the relationship of the other 4 dials are interlocked as they work by clockwork so the 1000 kwhr dial would have had to jump a lot of teeth to be in its position it is now.I personally rang BG, the supplier to get them to see sense about the old ladies dial meter. She could ill afford a massive bill which was way over anything she d had before. That alone is evidence also of a meter reading fault. OP, you can P.M. me if you would like me to phone your supplier as evidence. I work for BG, Scot Power and EDF and several micro suppliers
Check reads are nt charged but meters thought to be running too quickly are billed if there is no fault found. The danger is with another meter reader coming along who takes one look at the meter and gets it wrong again. We are not the brightest workers and certainly the suppliers call centre staff dont really understand the vagaries of the actual meters

With due respect, I was simple reading where the pointers were, not where I thought they should be. In the image, the pointer looks to be past the seven, which you admit.

That dial is moving clockwise, so if he were 'looking down' on the meter then the parallax would show the needle closer to the six, not the seven.

If you are going to keep that meter OP, I would suggest getting at eye level with it and also blowing off the cobwebs!
