At least they haven't gone the Sky route and dropped it entirely.
It's a cashflow calculation-if they don't need the improved cashflow any more, why would they give away substantial revenue?

I too have only become aware of this incredulous price hike the MSE news, i didnt get any notification from TT albeit my line rental is up for renewal early Oct 2014 and last time I renewed I paid £114!!
It beggars belief how they can get away with such a hike especially without any notice and doing it on the sly. How can they call it line value when its the most expensive line rental when compared with Virgin Sky + others!
Unfortunately I would love to move but will find this hard to do since Im on an older rolling contract which is good value (only on the premise that it works since when it doesnt TT are an absolute nightmare to deal with in order to resolve anythng) and I get consistent BB connection. So looks like they have got my good and proper by the goolies. I will however be sending them an email voicing my concern especially at the lack of notice.
Love to know if anyone has managed to get any goodwill discount on this new price if they are previously a long standing customer paying the previous annual line value price of £114

According to Talktalk's info on this you cannot get a speedy payment discount on VLR...

    http://help2.talktalk.co.uk/speedy-payment-discount#

I did not know about speedy payment discount until you mentioned it so thanks for that.

I think I will switch to speedy payments when VLR is due for renewal. That will save money compared to VLR and not tie me into another one year contract.

Thanks. I know its not possible to get a speedy payment discount on the VLR, but the point I was making is that their monthly line rental cost with the 15% discount is cheaper than the annual VLR and of course that way you don't have to pay it up front either.

    That's a big hike!

I'm note sure where else I can go as their broadband is still a great deal, free caller ID, free call barring etc.

They'd be better to kill the VLR altoghter as it now seems like a confidence trick.

I moved house at the end of July and used TTs home moving service. I was already on VLR that started in October 2013 so was on a super low cost of £114.

Moving home basically created a new contract with TT (18 months for broadband). They refunded the remaining months on my VLR and told me to buy it again through My Account on their website. I could only do this once the switch had been done and the account was all set up.

Logging onto the website after the 9th August I was amazed to find the VLR was £171!!! I wasn't told this when I was starting a new contract as part of my home move.

I complained and after a few firm e-mails they refunded me £30.00 (the difference between the £141 and £171).

They also stuck a charge of £5.00 on for a router delivery that they didn't tell me about when i setup the new contract so they also refunded this.

Effectively I've been tricked by TT into signing up for another contract...I am very likely to have selected a different provider had I know how much TT had hiked their prices.

Well I did a few months ago when I renewed my contract. The person I spoke to suggested he adds it to the bill, then I'd get the speedy payment discount when paying the bill - which I did!
  • Last year, when we signed up with TalkTalk, we paid £114 for Value Line rental, which at the time was equivalent to £9.50, they then offered for us to renew it recently, at a cost of £141, which was equivalent to £11.75, now to learn it's gone up again, it hardly seems worth bothering.

This is all going to make a lot more sense when they (inevitably) announce the new, increased, monthly line rental. Then the new, increased, annual payment will look a lot cheaper.

And far be it from me to suggest any kind of unofficial, unrecorded, cartel between 'competing' companies (that would be illegal!) but it does look mighty odd that all the line rentals seem to go up together to roughly the same sort of level.

Ofcom's presence might be expected to prevent that - were it not such an ineffective regulator.

Our deal is just coming to an end but it would appear that the package cost has come down as we only take broadband and unlimited call boost. This would appear to reduce this element by £5 per month offsetting the rental increase.

Taking the monthly line rental and paying promptly reduces the rental down to £13.56 which is less than the £14.35 equivalent of the new VLR.

Plusnet can do the same for £21.00 per month (12 month tie and 12 month discount) in total. If TT don't want to retain me happy to move.

That 15% prompt payment discount scheme is a PITA. Why don't they just move the DDR forward 7 days, subject to our agreement?

You can get the talktalk line rental for £162.72 for the year and pay it monthly. If you don't pay it for the year then they will add it onto your monthly bill. Then use the speedy payment discount where you save 15%.

So a 15% saving on their monthly charge of £15.95 takes it down to £13.56. This for the year works out at a charge of £162.72 for the year.

Since they introduced the 15% off for prompt payments I have only had their annual line rental, mine is due for renewal in October so can anyone else please confirm for me that their line rental charge can be reduced by 15% by paying quickly.

    Thanks

As of 1 Nov 2014, Speedy Payment Discount will be only 10%.

So £15.95 - 10% = £14.35/month for line rental, which is SAME RATE as the Value Line Rental.

Any way you look at it - it's a heft increase.
