hello everyone,

signed up with BT for the land line along with the Broadband package with the 10 GB allowance.

we are a couple, both of us working, and use internet for checking mails and browsing through sites like HDUK and MSE and the occasional browsing for finding things out.

Don't use fb, you tube, no online gaming or chatting or skype or download anything or even watch videos online anytime.

it's been less than a week, and when i checked, we have already used more than 2.5 GB of our allowance leaving us with 7.5 for the rest of the month.

mybt shows how much usage I am having on a daily basis and I am worried if I am go over the allowance.

what's my options

I could end up paying 5.50 for an extra 5GB on a monthly basis - but not sure our internet usage is as high as it shows

any help much appreciated

Please read post #23, for an update, thanks

You can usually use around 100MB per hour not doing very much at all...just reloading the pages you are on and clicking links will use about that. If you have 2 people on a computer then you can quite easily get through 10GB. You need to watch it to make sure you keep under the limit...or next time consider buying an unlimited plan so you have no worries about it.

If you have a mobile disconnect it from the home wi-fi. It'll use that to update itself and that could use quite a bit. If you have a Sky box disconnect that from the internet. You may also want to consider turning windows updates off and change it to show them to you to choose to install rather than letting it install them automatically.

    thanks HappyMJ

When I mentioned both of us working, we both work 9-5 jobs and are not at home during that time, very rarely we use our laptop/ipad in the morning, its usually between 7-9 pm we use it, that too not always.

there's no sky and both our mobiles have internet data package, so that's also not a possibility that it's using up the BT broad band.

If you really want to know, click on the Wi-Fi symbol on the screen (bottom right), right click on your connection, and choose Status. It tells you down to the byte how much you are using, for that session.

1.25GB per person per week is quite frugal, in my book.

    well, just an update guys

I am into 9GB of the 10GB allowance for this month and it's not even the 18th yet !! Got 2 warning emails from BT one when I crossed 6 GB and a second one when I crossed 8 GB.

Tried looking at upgrading in the BT website, and the cheapest option available is by upgrading by 18 pounds/ month on top of what I have already paid ( I paid upfront fees for 12 months line rental plus broadband with 10 GB allowance) and it's my first month

Not sure where I go from here. Guess I will get stung by going over the allowance every month. Do I have any other options?? help really appreciated.

You probably get free BT Wi-Fi? You could connect to your router by using the BT Fon connection maybe - think this gives you another 10GB.

Also use a browser with an ad-blocker.
  • Are you using wifi?

Is your wifi secured? Someone else could be 'borrowing' it.

I don't know what packages are you looking at, but here http://www.productsandservices.bt.com/products/broadband/packages it is £10 (£5 the first 6 months) for 10mbit/s and £16 (£8 the first 6 months) for unlimited. I'm pretty sure that if you call BT they let you upgrade to a higher package without problems. And that would be less than £10 more of what you're paying atm.

The limited usage you have described should not use anything like 10GB per month, unless you are doing something that you haven't mentioned, such as streaming from iPlayer/YouTube.
    How many devices are connected?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Wasn't there a thread here somewhere about BTFON and high traffic caused by it?
