I understand you like the look of Chromebooks because you're working to a budget, but I don't think they're good as a standalone device. No Skype, No Flash for starters, and very little local storage. Stick with a Windows laptop as above. Don't get finance through Currys or Argos, you'll pay higher than credit card rates. Good news if you want a small laptop is that they're cheaper!
Thanks - I was hoping for 0% finance - Curry's do it occasionally. I may try John Lewis also.0 -

Thanks. I think this is £269 new - although at the moment the extra £70 is quite a lot so this one might be a great idea.
Presume this one is quite powerful - can't be much worse than my old one (nearly 7 years old so anything will seem better). ?0 -
Lenovo IdeaPad S300 £199.99
Seriously....let it go.
You have £200. You are already in debt.
Do you need a more expensive laptop? If not, buy what you need.
If you want a more expensive laptop, save up for it. When you have the cash in hand, then you can decide if you still want a more expensive laptop.
I'm guessing that if and when you ever have £1000 cash in hand, you'll think of some other use for your cash.
None of them are powerful. Which is your current machine?0 -

Thanks, you are right. My current one is HP Pavilion. I've never really liked it, apart from the screen! It was bought refurbished and I've had it repaired once or twice. I suppose it's done the job. I would rather not go for another HP.
Sometimes for streaming films it freezes down and I am pretty sure that's the laptop as I can watch things on my phone at home, and the broadband is fine.
When you say not powerful - but enough for music, films, working on MS Word and emails? And hopefully will seem better than my old laptop (when it was working).0 -

HP Pavilion what? Not all HP machines are the same...that is why they have (full) model numbers, so that we can differentiate between them.
If you are referring to the small screen machine, Argos won't quibble if you wish to return the machine as unsuitable for your needs. So you can try it out at home.0 -
0% Finance doesn't really help though does it? You've got £200 at the mo. Buying a MacBook Air for £900 will cost you £75 per month for 12 months. I don't want to judge you, but I sense you can't afford that.
zarf is a fanboy who is simply repeating marketing rubbish and there's not much useful advice in there. You don't need a Mac, Windows is great now and people who bang on about Macs so much only do so because their last experience of Windows was on a clogged up XP machine (maybe a bit like your HP right now!).
Please don't be fooled by 0% finance. You still have to hand the money over! Lots of good machines have already been suggested. BTW I've got a Macbook Pro and an hackintosh and use both OSs plenty before I get called a 'windoze fanboi'.0 -

Are you sure that you'll be happy to drop down from a 17" screen to 11.6"?
How much RAM is installed to the HP?
I think that you should attempt to back up any important data that you wish to keep and to run a clean install of the Operating System.
It does appear to have a particularly bad reputation. Likely a problem with the nVidia GPU. They should have refunded or exchanged the machine a long time ago.0
