It very much depends at which age the step parent comes into the child's life and the involvement of the birth father. Problems usually arises when the step parent wants to take on a parental role that the step child refuse to accept. I'm not talking about rebellion that any teenager had with their own parent but when the respect for a parent isn't there something that can be gained in some cases but certainly not forced.
