  • It seems to me as if Sainsbs is pretty much as expensisve as Waitrose. Some of their prices are dearer than W´s and other a bit cheaper, so all in all pretty much the same price. So I´d go to Waitrose instead if I wasnt a regular Aldi shopper ;-)

I have shopped at all of the biggest supermarkets, including two different sainsburys supermarkets and I can tell you that the quality is no better than the other supermarkets. Actually several products I find rather poor quality. They all have their strength and weakness but I found that S' had a few more weaknesses than many of the others, as well as being more expensive.
Also the two Sainsburys I've been to, many times, they are not a pleasure to shop in, very crowded, manic at peak hours.
My everyday shopping is from Asda, I'm now doing all of my weekly shopping there because even after upgrading one or two products that are not their strongest point, I'm still saving a lot of money.
Fruits and vegs are a particularly weak area at the S's I visit, very expensive and just OK, while Asda's are much cheaper and overall better quality, at least at the store I go to.

    I've just seen this reply.

As I said, my local stores ARE a pleasure to shop in. You'll always be checked out in no time and the fruit and veg are always of a great quality. The aisles are wide, the stores are bright and new and there is plenty of stock.

All of the Asdas that I have local to me are awful places to be - trollies blocking the aisles, and it is the only place that I have seen people in their pjs, fake uggs and top knots in real life! My most local store has the teeniest f&v aisle and is then dedicated to ready meals and packets. Not what I'm interested.

And the Morrisons is hell on earth. And that's without mentioning the utterly woeful self-checkouts in Morrisons  The dates on the Morrisons fruit and veg is awful - punnets of raspberries for £2 at the end of the day when the date on them is for the next day, etc. And this is with the quality getting better as well. A few years I wouldn't have set foot in it! I also found it quite expensive on a recent visit - and that was just 15 minutes after I'd come out of Waitrose.

The tescos are similar - always mobbed.

I love Sainsburys for stressfree shopping.

I will be in my local asda over the weekend as ecover is on offer. It will take me about 3 times as long as it does in Sainsburys though.

agree with the waitrose comments. i work near a large waitrose and meet someone i take home every evening after work and their quality is much better than sainsburys and for basic stuff not much dearer eg 4 pints of milk is a quid with a waitrose card and i get a free coffee everyday too and read the newspapers on the cafe! waitrose also offer fair prices to farmers and often feature them in their free monthly mag! sainsbury's is over a pound now I think!

also we always pick up lots of bargains when they reduce stuff and it definitely tastes great!

also a free newspaper if you spend a fiver instore or ten at weekends!

I personally prefer to shop at Sainsburys out of all supermarkets because of the atmosphere and good customer service but they can be expensive on the majority of items.
On occasions however they do some really good offer,s for example a few days ago I bought my dad a 70cl bottle of Teachers whiskey for £11 (it usually sells for around £17) Asda sold it for £17 and Tesco had it on offer at the time for £14. I also got a good offer a couple of weeks ago on Gillette mach 3 razors (again for my dad) buy 3 packs of 4 blades and get £10 off, which no other store could match even on offer, not even amazon or ebay could beat it.
I may not be the brightest star in the sky but I still shine. Please be gentle :p
  • I agree that the fresh fruit and veg at Sainsbury's is far superior to Tesco, Asda, Aldi etc.
I also agree that it's much more pleasant to shop in a Sainsbury's than an Asda. I don't feel 'a cut above' I just feel more relaxed and less crowded than in an Asda.

Less crowded because people aren't prepared to pay the extra for the same product?:rotfl:

A couple of days ago I went to my local S's and was thinking about this thread.
I got some good bargains, very pleased with that, for a change.
But there was also a kind of a domestic, where staff were following a man around the shop, he was shouting and threatening a woman, the police was called.
The previous time there was a family talking to one another, nothing wrong with that, but the people were a couple of isles apart, so shouting at the top of their lungs, never seen this before in a supermarket.....
The second nearest is absolutely huge and very busy with people pushing and shoving everywhere.
Asda near where I work is spacious, big aisles so customers don't bang into one another, and fairly relaxed. No long queues even on a Saturday.
From what other people are saying it's the world upside down, no doubt. ;)
  • It is each to their own I guess. I must say the Sainsburys staff at our local branch are brilliant.

Always polite and efficient. One day I forgot to pick up my gillette razors I had bought when I was packing my bags. Realised when I got home and I returned to the store. The cashier remembered me as we had been chatting and even remembered I had bought the razors. They were no longer at the till but the customer services assistant said no problem and went to give me a new pack. Now, at £20 I could have just said I had forgotten them even if I hadn't so excellent service there.

Another occasion I went to pick up a large quantity of glasses I had ordered on free hire. Unfortunatley due to someone returning them late they weren't ready and were still being washed. Again the same CS lady said to go and help myself to a bottle of wine. Any bottle? Yes! I chose a nice £8.99 prosecco and when I came back I joked I should have picked up a Champagne at £30. She said I could if I wanted but I declined as the offer a free bottle was more than enough considering we weren't buying any booze from them for the party.

Just my positive experience of Sainsburys. Tescos on the other hand….

How expensive is Sainsbury's? Too expensive for me. Their Basics range is not as cheap as the Value items I buy from Tesco. I can't afford their fresh fruit and veg unless it has a yellow sticker on it. In fact everything I buy from Tesco is more expensive at Sainsbury's. The only time I venture there is if they have a special offer on cat food, I mostly come out with out buying anything.

Looking at what I am ordering online, it appears about the same as Tesco, in the main.
