One thing that can be said about Sainsbo's basics gear like Eggs or Tea bags is that it's free range / fair trade compared to value gear at Tesco/Asda.

Basics eggs are "barn" not free range.
    Tea bags are fair trade.
    Bananas are fair trade.

Sainsbury's weren't implicated in the horsemeat scandel http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/newsbysector/retailandconsumer/9939340/Sainsburys-sales-surge-following-horse-meat-crisis.html

Also I find that Sainsbury's generally use British chicken in everything whereas Tesco and Asda "hide" Thai chicken in some products such as spring rolls and other ready meals.

My apologies to Sainsbury's. Their frozen beefburgers were wuthdrawn but tested negative. The surprising results of whose products did and whose didn't can be found here:

I do not retract a single word of the rest of my comments about this overpriced, overrated store.

I think there own food is one of the best, although main brands can be a little more.

Interesting article in DM saying Aldi aren't always cheapest and sainsburys are cheapest for baby products

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/money/bills/article-2718734/Is-Aldi-really-cheapest-Exclusive-research-reveals-supermarket-really-offers-best-value.html

Personally I think its high time all supermarkets stopped BOGOF and just lowered prices on promotion etc. No false offers which Tesco were particularly bad for

Aldi are cheaper than other supermarkets. And I can say their products do not taste worse than the other supermarkets. In fact some are even better.

Just to say I am not one of those who swears Aldi are better than others just for the sake of it. They have had to prove it to me, as I don't buy just anything.

And just for a little test on price, I recently priced up a £9.50 shop at Aldi's with the identical products from Sainsbury's.

Sainsbury's costed out at an extra £5.32 on top. So buying there would have cost me just under shade of £15 for the same items.

I go to Sainsburys occasionally, to get their TTD multi grain loaf which is the best bread I've ever had from a supermarket. It's slighter more expensive than 'best' loaves at other supermarkets (£1.40), which is typical of JS, but is well worth the extra.
JS produce is generally of a higher quality than the others and it's a personal choice whether you are prepared to pay the extra. JS have an excellent range of tricolor dried pastas (the others just have fusilli) and I stocked up for months when they were 3 for 2.
JS TTD quadruple choc cookies are the best cookies at any supermarket by some distance but even currently on offer at £1.50 they are an expensive treat, I'm going to try Lidl's quadruple choc cookies this weekend when they are half price.
When I go to JS I use mysupermarket to look for savvy buys beforehand and look on the shelves for offers while I'm there. There are bargains to be had but you have to be careful and I certainly wouldn't use JS for the regular shop.

I no longer shop at Sainsbury's it's too expensive, I find Asda and Lidl much better value for money, and my local ethnic stores as well.

Yes , expensive store. When I do shop there I put a small item through, in the event I get a £3 for £20 spend voucher.

So much for their tag ' Living more for less' Rubbish.

Sainsbury's ethos is that, yes, they may be a percentage point or two more expensive than the alternative; however, the quality will be better.

Obviously, I can't speak for every store but it is certainly true for my local stores - they are a pleasure to shop in.

I have shopped at all of the biggest supermarkets, including two different sainsburys supermarkets and I can tell you that the quality is no better than the other supermarkets. Actually several products I find rather poor quality. They all have their strength and weakness but I found that S' had a few more weaknesses than many of the others, as well as being more expensive.
Also the two Sainsburys I've been to, many times, they are not a pleasure to shop in, very crowded, manic at peak hours.
My everyday shopping is from Asda, I'm now doing all of my weekly shopping there because even after upgrading one or two products that are not their strongest point, I'm still saving a lot of money.
Fruits and vegs are a particularly weak area at the S's I visit, very expensive and just OK, while Asda's are much cheaper and overall better quality, at least at the store I go to.

I agree I think they are a bit more ethical than the other cheapies, or they lead & the others follow.
I love their basics apples & they are about the cheapest of all.
