The OP said that the house used to be lived in by the caretaker of a school that was later closed down. I wonder if it was actually owned by the school?

I think he's done well, if what he's said is true then he's had a really rough start in life so to be getting a 30K job at age 21 is something to be proud of. If making use of an abandoned house helps him climb the ladder a bit more then good luck to him. He's not hurting anyone and he's not depriving a family of a house as it's been left empty for so long.

Yes, I can see that point of view. Yes, he might have a successful legal case. Yes, the council have been neglectful (if this post isn't fake but the triumphant bits, the sense of entitlement, the sense of self pity and the nods towards having plenty of money are very Andy-esque....For those forum members with less experience, 'AndyandFlo' was a poster who pretended to commit suicide on the forum and who pops up in various guises on threads where he boasts about his income and what wonderful things the state does for him. His trolling posts are full of things to try and make people jealous of him).

However, there is a massive shortage of social housing with extensive overcrowding. I would have been more impressed if his sense of citizenship kicked in and he persisted in reporting the admin error of the local authority to housing association transfer.

He's in the position to put down a sensible deposit and get a mortgage on his own house so isn't now needy, despite the nice touch of Annie about his post.

And he's not climbing the ladder, he's skipping the ladder...

So someone claims to have 20k in savings, 30k in income and plans to rent out the spare rooms to lodgers for £600pcm, and we salute their appropriation of a family sized social housing property as heroism? Because they had, like, a sad upbringing....

    Nice one, Andy.

What's happened about the council tax? Non-payment of the council tax for such a long period could have been one way that the council could have identified a disused house that could have been bought back into reuse with their powers.

Assuming it's been banded , it's shown on the council's system (they should be reconciling against the valuation list on an annual basis) and has not been taken off the list by the VOA at some point then it's a major c**k up.

I seen similar happen where the VOA has never banded the property and I've seen similar happen where a council hasn't reviewed an exemption for a long time - neither of these were council properties though.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

    .

Another miracle - the first being that nobody in the local area has reported it to the local council/empty homes agency despite its proximity to a street full of social housing owned by one landlord, the second that the council tax non-payment hasn't sent up any kind of flags or audit alerts, the third that the local housing association doesn't see anything amiss about a missing property when the OP alerted them.

It's clear now that they will triumph and gain ownership in 3 years without a glitch as the stars are aligned in their favour, the way they have transcended their humble background and have leapfrogged into graduate/management level pay from their admin job. Wonderful.

There does seem to be a lot of points missed...

Hi there, I thought I would come here a give a last update. After I made this thread, I decided that I would call the council and make them an offer to buy the property off them. They said they would get back to me but they didn't. I came back one day to the property to find that they re boarded up the property completely and they have threatened with court action if I was step on the property again.

The house has now been put up for sale on auction with a starting price of 40,000.

    http://www.zoopla.co.uk/for-sale/details/34169019?search_identifier=daab755fa2d670ccaa50631742f1daa1

I only have 20,000, I believe I cannot get a mortgage due to the current state of the house, the house most likely go at the hammer for 60 - 70k.

I am really sad that they have done this but I guess there's nothing I can do.

It would takes weeks and weeks for the council to investigate the ownership situation, instruct lawyers to double check the ownership after a tip off " can I buy this abandoned property "

It would then take even more time to instruct an auction house as correct tenders need to be considered and the house put up for sale!

A few days ? Nah no way !

I did enjoy the Andy esque thread though :)
