Why do u think u should get a free, 3 bed house? Just curious as to the logic

Why not? The council don't seem to want it as it's just been left to fall into disrepair.

Anyway, the OP has said he'd buy it.

I remember, years ago, I had some friends who lived in squats in Stoke Newington. They had a license from the council to squat there and paid a token rent. Wonder if anything like that is still available.

I'm guessing it was missed when property was transferred from council to HA.

If it's fully functional and acceptable why not just stay there quietly as long as possible. Personally if I could afford it I would open a seperate account and pay in 'rent' payments monthly, let them build up and then you'll have a nice nest egg ready for if trouble ever does start . You can decide then what might be the best plan of action depending on situation at the time.

Hmm but on the document it only lists the council as the sole owners, not the HA, however as shown above there are is a part where the HA is mentioned but I don't understand that bit.

I think the HA built the house along with the 11 other houses and it was transfered to the council. What I must add also is that the person who was living in the property was a caretaker for the school that was litterally across the road from the property (70 yards), I don't know who, but i remember at the time i was 12 or something, he had to go because either the primary school or council wanted him out and since then it has been boarded up ever since..

I think I'll just do what you've suggested in regards to moving in and setting up an account for 'rent' payments.

I wonder if the council take someone to the court because of this, apart from loosing custody/right to settle in that property What the other party will have to loose.

Do the squatter need to pay all of the cost of other party , eg. cost of council solicitors, administrative cost, etc ?

I believe I will be liable for all costs, years ago there was legal aid which I am guessing would of covered the cost if you lost in such cases, a builder won a case of a 400k case and used legal aid and didn't have to pay any costs.

Yeah, good luck. There are far too many houses just lying around empty for years on end. It's disgusting when there are so many homeless people.

Thank you very much Ruthn for your kind words, I have been browsing this forum for a few months now but haven't registered it, it has helped me with many difficulties I have come across over the years with lots of useful content, I was wary when I signed up today however because there a lot of judgemental people on here so I was going to leave it so I am very surprised with the useful and helpful advice and warm welcoming. Thank you. x

Just a word of caution, you've probably given enough away about the location for anyone with local knowledge to work out where you are. Probably not advisable on a forum, suggest you edit your posts.

Especially when it's owned by the council, they certainly have a long list of people looking to be homed.

I can only guess it fell off the system somewhere and hasn't been noticed.

Frankly, the house is better off with someone looking after it and keeping it in repair, even if the law may not agree. So well done dazo.

Moving in? I thought you had lived there for 7 years - have I got the wrong end of the stick?

How are you able to prove you've lived there when it comes to claiming adverse possession?

I'm surprised that the neighbours haven't reported it as empty so that the council can take enforcement action. Many neighbourhoods would take action when there is a derelict property due to the anti-social issues that can result, affect on the area and property prices, etc.

What's happened about the council tax? Non-payment of the council tax for such a long period could have been one way that the council could have identified a disused house that could have been bought back into reuse with their powers.

This link may help you understand what councils can do if they do decide to act about empty properties.
